What Sort of Gumtree Scam Is This?

https://www.gumtree.com.au/s-ad/melbourne-cbd/iphone/buying-…

It makes 0 sense that anyone would buy a lot of new and sealed mobile phones for cash - these phones aren't that popular from what I can see and there isn't a backlog otherwise. I'm sure if I had the money I could stroll into JBHIFI or Officeworks and walk out with a new Iphone XS within the hour. Whats the deal?

I'm not sure that's a scam as opposed to a (not very well disguised) ad to act as a fence for stolen goods.

    • This, scumtree fencing op

That or they're just looking to mug whoever shows up…

Came here to say fence or mug people.

    • Kind of what I thought, found it odd the person even went as far as to fake a business card for the whole enterprise.

"Trading Post" used to have the nickname "Fencing Post". (Maybe that should be the "nicked name").

"Trading Post" used to have the nickname "Fencing Post". (Maybe that should be the "nicked name").

When I was a kid, I would go bargain hunting at garage sales, then sell (sometimes repair then sell) on Trading post for profit.
This 1 guy came round to buy VHS player, and he's like "IS THIS HOT" ?? So I felt it and said, no its not hot, maybe warm. Lol. I genuinely had no idea what he meant until later as an adult.

It doesn't sound like a scam, just someone looking to buy new phones cheaply and resell them for a higher price. Who is going to sell a new phone for well under the retail price? Someone suddenly desperate for cash, or stolen merchandise, or merchandise bought using stolen credit card details.

Tell the neighbors your a phone dealer so it doesn't raise suspicion cars coming going frequently.
It's code for drugs and money laundering

They will be expecting the person who's selling it to be selling it well under the retail price.

A lot of people acquire products in Australia and the US (or any other country that sells stuff relatively cheap) and take it to places like third world countries (where the retail prices are high because of tax) and sell it just under retail. The profit margins are huge.

For example, the RRP for the iPhone XS about AUD$200 less than the retail price in Vietnam. And they're still flying out of stores like hotcakes. The is despite the cost of the iphone XS being about 4 months of the average monthly wage.

So to answer your question, it's not likely to be a scam in the traditional sense - especially if they pay cash for whatever product they're buying. The only "scam" part might be when they try to lowball the owner on price knowing they might be desperate to sell.

some might have also signed up to a telsra or optus deal, can get cash straight up, and pay it off over 24 months, like a free ish loan
