Recovering Crashed Hard Drive

My sister's hard drive failed a few years ago - when it's plugged in, it briefly spins, then makes a faint clicking noise.

Does anyone have any experience with recovering data? I tried basic recovery on it years ago, can't remember exactly what i tried but likely seatools and gparted to no luck

has anyone had any experience with data recovery companies, or any of the paid software available for data recovery? I think i'll try Payam Data Recovery, it seems they offer free quotes

  • What is the full model name of the hard drive?

    • Seagate Expansion Portable Drive - Model no SRD00F1

Not sure of the exact model in the enclosure, i can probably open it up if that'll help?

      edit - i cracked it open - model st1000LM024

I've used this company before for a work hard drive after the computer caught fire. Cost about 600 for mine.

You'll have to weigh up whether it's worth it. For me- it was, few months worth of work not backed up. Won't be doing that again in a hurry.

  • I can highly recommend Ontrack data recovery services. They are based in Brisbane but have a drop off location in all major cities. I used them for recovering data from an android phone which was stuck in a bootloop. I dropped my phone at their drop off location on Collins Street, and the whole process took about 15 days. These guys were extremely professional and kept me updated at all times during the process. In the end, they sent the recovered data on a new 1TB encrypted hard drive to Melbourne along with my phone.

I had also turned to the Ozbargain community for help and that is when someone suggested Ontrack to me. Good luck!

  • You're lucky that is a decent drive (made by Samsung before Seagate took over their hard drive division a few years ago). When they fail the data is usually recoverable. A recovery would be less likely if it was a newer seagate portable drive.

When you plug it in, put your hand on the drive and feel the vibration as the disks spin up. If you can feel it spin up, it clicks a few times, then spins down, then its almost certain that the heads have failed and the data can only be recovered by a head replacement, which a data recovery company would need to do.

If the drive continues vibrating and the disks do not spin down, then there is a decent chance you can recover the data by imaging the drive.

    • you;ve described it perfectly - sounds like a head replacement - i'm assuming this isn't cheap?

      • If the heads aren't working, no software will work, the heads will need to be replaced, this is no doable by someone at home.

+1 for Ontrack, friends iPhone died from water damage a week prior, got all the data back with only a couple of corrupted photos.

      • Unfortunately no a head replacement won't be cheap, but its really not something that's DIY possible. What state are you in?

        • In Victoria

  • +1

Thanks for reminding me to back up my data!

  • take the drive out from the case and try with a docking or direct to the computer, sometimes is the case does not supply enough power to the drive.

    • yep, I tried that a few years ago - no luck

  • thanks for the replies - I'll give ontrack a go

  • Just talked with ontrack, they suggested it would likely be around the 1.5k mark for repairs.

I'm heading to manila for a few days next week, it just occurred to me that it could be way cheaper to get it done over there - any chance anyone knows of a reputable company?

  • Watch this video for how it's done.
