Where to Go Caravanning over Christmas! (Leaving From Sydney)

Hi All

I'm struggling to make an itinerary on where to go caravanning over Christmas. Can anybody assist with recommendations using the below criteria?

  1. Departing Sydney
  2. 9 nights 10 days
  3. Stay away from caravan sites
  4. Go sightseeing not just 400 km a day of driving each day
  5. Can go offroad but limited to short stints on gravel roads as van is not a full offroad unit
  6. Places already visited and prefer to avoid (Victorian highlands, Fraser Island, Great Ocean Road)

Can I also get any feedback on the following locations if anybody has been over Christmas!

  1. Sydney to Cairns - too hot/wet? too long?

  2. Sydney to Uluru - too hot?

Thanks in advance all!

Two options that I can think of:
    - Kosciuszko national park/Jindabyne region: should be cool enough to stay outside during the day. This option won't work if you have dogs though. There are plenty of walks and camping sites.
    - Tasmania: you will spend a few days driving to/from Melbourne though

If you haven't already had the wikicamp app, I highly recommend it. It has very useful information about campsites and makes it very easy to plan the trip.

I wouldn’t go to cairns over Christmas. Too wet. Just did hunter valley to cairns over the school hols, it was 3 days solid driving, too far for 9-10 days. 5300km total trip.

Go site seeing not just 400km a day of driving each day

I mean… Uluru is 2,800kms away and Cairns is 2,400kms away by the shortest, least scenic route. Over 9 nights/10 days, both of those are at least 200kms - 300kms per day not including detours to go sight-seeing. I don't think either is really possible because you'll be knackered every single day.

And that's going one way. If you need to get back to Sydney, both are basically literally impossible if you want to do anything other than just drive, eat and sleep.

Though going to down to Barossa (via Melbourne?) might be possible, because Adelaide to Sydney one-way is about 3 days at a leisurely but non-stop driving pace, so with 10 days you can enjoy the sights?

Head west! Oberon (via Jenolan Caves, Bathurst (goldfields), Mudgee (wineries), Dubbo (zoo) - Canowindra (ballooning) - just off the top of my head. Lots more to see and do.

I wouldn't go to the West in summer. The heat, wind and dryness are too much to have a good time.

I agree with you that there are so much to see and do but only when the weather is tolerable.

      • Heh I guess it depends on your definition of "tolerable". I lived out in the midwest of NSW for many years and it was the winters I couldn't stand. Sure, summers get hot, but it's a dry heat. Might be 40c but once you're in the shade you're way cooler. I now live in Brisbane and even 30c days feel hotter, due to the humidity. I could manage a week of 40C out west better than a week of 35C where I am now.But if you don't like any sort of heat, then avoid the west for sure.

        • … also lived at Oberon for a short spell. Rellos were coming for a visit in November and I warned them - bring warm clothes, it's snowing. They didn't believe me and nearly froze. New Years Eve that year saw us all in big coats and beanies. So staying around the fringes of the midwest slopes and plains won't be that intolerable.
