Can Someone Tell Me Why Hotels in Sydney Are Soo Expensive Right Now?

Been trying to get a hotel room for 2 days in sydney and they are above $300-$400 when they're normally $150-250. I don't want to answer my own question but Invictus game can't explain why more than 75% of sydney hotels are booked out.

  • There's Sculptures by the Sea but not sure how many tourists that attracts

  • Harry and Meghan press corps.

    • no. They're gone.

  • Sydney hotels are predominantly occupied by Chinese, Taiwanese and Hong Kong tourists.

Their numbers are up by 1.4 million in the last year so expect hotels to be pretty expensive. Plus the Sydney sunshine is starting to show so expect more hotels to fill up.

    • Perhaps sunshine, because I'm monitoring hotel prices everyday.

This week many hotels in Sydney have been booked out because of the SIBOS event happening in the ICC. Thousands of bankers around the world are having heaps of conferences and meetings here. And the higher the occupancy rate, the more expensive room rates are (same as air tickets). Those bankers will leave Sydney from this Friday…

  • Backpacker hostels are full.

  • Spring Racing too.
We noticed Melbourne is also sold out.

  • It's generally to do with some sort of event.
Hotels are usually dynamically priced meaning more demand = higher pricing.

  • Sydney is attracting more events and so this situation is likely to persist for some time. It will obviously be bouncing up and down from week to week, but expect Sydney hotel prices to be higher generally for the foreseeable future than they have been in the past, at least until more supply enters the market.

  • Sydney is crap… Just holiday somewhere better plus cheaper :)

    • Don't vote for the Liberal Party then. All of Sydney's problems over the last 20yrs can be directly attributed to decisions made by the State and/or Federal Liberal Party.
