We decided to move the free-to-play launch of Save the World out of this year. We’re working on a broad set of features, reworks, and backend system scaling we believe are needed to go free-to-play. Save the World has grown consistently since our launch in July 2017 and Fortnite overall has experienced unprecedented growth. Scaling up for the legions of player heroes who will be joining the fight is key to providing an excellent experience. This applies to all of our players, old and new, so we’re taking the time to get this right.

To thank our founders, both new and old, if you log in and play during the Fortnitemares Event, you’ll receive both Brainiac Jonesy and Skull Ranger Ramirez for free!

For those of you who want to start playing right now, we’ve got you. Starting this week, we’ll be hosting a 50% off sale for the Standard, Deluxe, Super Deluxe and Limited Founder’s packs.

lame. They said it will be free, now all of a sudden it’s not. Like they don’t make enough money out of kids buying “skins” and “dances”

Greed will be their down fall

      Sorry this is completely misinformed.

They will actually make more money when the game goes free, if anything keeping it at this stage is costing them potential money.

The in game currency is transferable to the battle Royale mode and the amount earned early game outweighs the price spent compared to buying the currency itself.

Many children get this part of the game as they cannot afford to buy currency frequently so this actually rewards them for playing.

Once the game is free to play new players will not get access to these earning avenues.

Making it free now will keep it relevant and popular.

With the release of BO4, the amount of players (especially people aged over 13) has dropped dramatically, and will continue to drop with other new games being released.

I've noticed the drop in older players and time to connect to a server (rarely need to wait for a serve in the last few weeks). Also with my kids and their friends, I haven't seen them play it since BO4 came out.

And I agree with you. They would make more money if they just made it free now, as it will keep players they already have and attract new players who will continue to buy skins and the like.

        • Tbh that's probably the real underlying greed element, the younger ones are the ones they care about playing long term. The whole micro-transaction gaming area is a cesspool of greed (just when I countered your earlier post is because I'd prefer to try dismiss any incorrect info)

I think if BR type games are to have a long term there will be large population fluctuations between multiple franchises based on new content etc. Will certainly.be interesting to see if it is just flavour of the month.

Either way epic have made more $$ than they every would of expected from FN and have their fair share of my cash!

          • @D2Rflex: I concur with you last statement. :'-)

      • Many children get this part of the game as they cannot afford to buy currency frequently so this actually rewards them for playing.

Then the kid who is living near my place spent $500 is those few children …

      • in game currency
        skins
        tiered version of games

gaming industry is a cesspool these days

  • You don’t get much more in the more expensive packs than the basic edition so just grab the basic. If u just login everyday it will pay for itself in bucks anyway. U can also grab lots more from daily quests and schematic trade ins. If u can bothered

    • How does it pay for itself in v bucks?

Going up to deluxe isn't the worst choice as it comes with a pretty useful gun schematic and some other small inclusions. But would purely come down to personal spending preferences.

Super deluxe is not worth it IMO

Limited would be down the track if you are really enjoying the game and the additions appeal to you.

And ultimate EDT is if you love the game and are more than happy to part with the money. Is a large outlay though! I personally purchased it, however used my destiny 2 refund and sold the 4 standard edition codes that came with out (this is no longer part of that package) this certainly helped minimise the cost for me

  • aww man. my son'll be crushed by this news… he was so looking forward to STW going free

  • New update seems to incorporate zombie in battle
Royale. Seems like a money grab to try get kids to get their parents to buy the STW pack disguised as a Halloween event

  • Paid for the deluxe one but it isnt downloading on the xbone… anyone else have this problem?

    • If you have fortnite already installed it’s not a new download
      Just click the stw mode
