Help with MicroSD Card Reader

Hello friends. I'm on the market for a decent microsd card reader (or regular SD card reader as I have converters) and was wondering if anyone could recommend any reliable ones that work with current gen microsd cards.

The most recent relevant post dates back half a year (https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/374479) so wondering if there's any other suggestions for better ones now, or ones with any bargains.

Thanks for your help!

  • What kind of reader? A USB one or a 10-in-1 slot for computer desktops?

    • Not sure what the 10 in 1 actually has but right now I'm only looking to be able to read microsd cards and ideally as simple/convenient as possible - so a USB one would be better.

      • +1

For me, the reliability hiaerchy goes:-

        1) Sandisk https://www.harveynorman.com.au/sandisk-extreme-pro-usb-3-0-…
        2) Belkin
        3) Lexar
        4) Verbatim https://www.officeworks.com.au/shop/officeworks/p/verbatim-m…
        .
        .
        .
        X) Unbranded Chinese products (Anything else from eBay/Amazon/Target/whatever)

Desktop 10-in-1's look like this: https://www.pccasegear.com/products/18572%3FPPC%3DY%26gclsrc…

        • Thanks a lot for your input!

          • @coldazure: Here's some more options:-

Reality is most will do the job but difficult to gauge longevity and quality. SD isn't the most reliable storage medium in my experience but unfortunately it's most popular for video cameras.

You'll probably want to get a USB3 one if you have a USB3 port on computer for faster transfers but will certainly be more expensive.

StarTech would probably a decent medium between overpriced branded products and unknown Chinese. They do make fairly good quality products at reasonable prices.

            • @Hybroid: Just had a look at that 10 in 1 and wow it's actually pretty cool/cheap.

Now I'm considering that too haha.

              • @coldazure: That'll be the most economical and least likely to break or get lost but note it's NOT USB and needs to be wired direct to motherboard header in your desktop.

No use if you're on a laptop or tablet.

                • @Hybroid: yeah I know. Basically I'm considering ripping the case open and sticking it in - isn't actually that big of a deal for what I'm getting by the looks of it.

                  • @coldazure: It's very simple to do, essentially one power cable and one USB3 header cable to your motherboard.

Here's a similar unit, might be worth checking free motherboard ports before you buy: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8xT-JH_NdIk

There's a couple different Icy Box models with different ports on the front, have a look and find the one that'll suit you best.

        • X) Unbranded Chinese products (Anything else from eBay/Amazon/Target/whatever)

Definitely true, but depending on how urgently OP needs it, they could buy a dozen of these generic ones for the same price as one of the branded ones, and there's practically zero risk in trying them (can't think of anyway an adapter can damage the SD card, for example).

          • @HighAndDry: Definitely agreed, you can pop into Target and get a cheap $8 one that'll work I suppose. Just make sure to always COPY files off the SD card and never MOVE as it can cause file corruptions. Not that it couldn't happen with a $100 one but less likely.

  • Just something cheap with USB 3.0 from B&M store, as even the expensive one like sandisk only come with 2yrs warranty.

    • Thanks for the response. Sorry but what's a B&M store?

      • Bricks and Mortar store at a guess,
I've been using a $1 usb mirco SD reader for over 2 years, not the fastest but does
what I need it to do.

  • I have bought nothing except cheap USB card readers and they have universally been atrocius, working half the time and doing things like preventing the PC from passing POST until the card is removed.

Can't comment as to whether expensive readers are crap but cheap ones certainly are :P

Currently using a "Media Dashboard" as a card reader:

    https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Multifuntion-5-25-Media-Dashboar…

There's various "media dashboards" with LCDs and connectors for all sorts of things (bear in mind you need a motherboard with the right connectors eg USB headers and a 5.25" inch bay in your case to use these things). I use mine as a card reader and it is crap for the reasons already listed but it works half the time.
