Flipping Shoes Opportunity - money to be made?

Have a idea in my head and wanted to get a second/third etc opinion on it

Is there a market to buy shoes from the US (Nikes, Adidas etc) at a discount + free shipping and resell here for say $30-40 more (+ postage) per pair on ebay/gumtree etc?

The prices we pay here in Australia through Hype/Footlocker etc is ridiculous compared to the prices in USA.

I doubt it, they would be treated as second hand and buyers would expect a decent discount compared to retail. Not to mention expensive postage from the US.

    • Not with hypebeast shoes

  • Ebay charges fees so that $30-40 has to be increased to $50-$60 - also you are taking on the risk of holding non moving stock - look at all the shoe retailers on here with large discounts and see what happens if you sold at their price to your bottom line .

Now if you are just going to drop ship you are going to have to deal with stock arriving or getting held up and chase up orders which can be a real pain .

    • Forget it.

Source: Have several shoe businesses as clients (both for legal and consulting work) - many indeed do fail and the risk is pretty great. Unless you have a shop and a great way to deal with all types of people. Customer service must be paramount but you still have the risk of non-moving stock and picking the wrong models/colours etc.
Plus there is tax, expensive shipping, warranty(!) etc.

  • The only way you will make money is if you peddle fake sneakers

  • How much cheaper could you really flip them for compared to Eastbay? You can't knock $10 off the price of a shoe and expect people will buy from some rando on Gumtree instead of Eastbay just to save $10.

  • The money made in the shoe retail business is from selling the business.

    1. Stock up supposedly "rare" shoes. (Come on. They are massed produced AF).

    2. Do up the shops to be pretentiously "underground" but in a high traffic location.

    3. Liberal use of strip lighting and inneficient display to mask limited offering.

    4. Hire hotties.

    5. Tax return - make sales look high, make off sizes look like prime stock, count bonus stock, make wages look low.

    6. Sell the business to the next sucker.

So you would be a sole trader?

    • not planning to, just a floating idea I have.

  • Only worth while if you can get a connection to limited release sneakers like the off white nike collabs then selling them to Sydney/Melbourne asian students for 400% mark up. match with appropriate anti social social club teeshirt and you're set.

    • Very true. The off white Menta's went for sale last week for $250 USD. Now you would be lucky to find one less than $700 USD

Id rather pay $100 to footlocker than $60 to a gumtree guy knowing if they rip or something I just walk in store and replace. I can also assure they are genuine and not fake.
