Ryzen CPU Has Extra Cores?

I just got my Ryzen 1600 CPU up and running and it has extra cores? 8 and 16 instead of 6 and 12.

I ran Cinebench CPU three times with these scores (Everything closed but had steam+discord open in background) :
1469cb, 1473cb and 1474 cb.
Did I just win the lottery or is my CPU a mistake??? I don't know whether to be happy or worried. It was bought a 1600, was engraved as a 1600 on the chip and shows up in all software as a 1600 but it has 8 cores and 16 threads!

Some of that batches have 8 cores by accident. You're very lucky.

    • Wow if it's not a problem then hell yeah! I've been having issues with the motherboard of this CPU for a month now and only just got it running even though I purchased it well over a month ago. If it is perfectly fine then the wait was worth it! I played CS:GO and Overwatch for a while and seemed stable. Has been running idle for around 7 hours and hasn't messed up, albeit on idle/general browsing.
So I'm running an RX480, does this mean my next upgrade if I wish should be with the GPU?

      • Yes. With the lucky batch number, I think your CPU can outperform the AMD Ryzen 7 1700.

        • Wow this is the first time I've felt lucky in years. Maybe my parents will be proud of me? oh who am I kidding they won't.
What GPU would you recommend me to upgrade to? I have a FreeSync monitor so I'm drawn to team red but thankfully the 590 is coming soon (probably won't be a big diff from my 480) and then there's NAVI which god knows when will come out and if it will be good so I don't know whether to upgrade now to VEGA or wait.

          • @Ostrk: Just looking at your stats; that is a r7 1700 (not 1700x or 1800x or 2700). Still a great free bonus upgrade from the 1600. You can probably hold onto it until 2021 and upgrade it to a r9-4800X (?), and just focus on the GPU mainly like those people who stuck on the legendary Core i5-2500k/3770k.

Yeah, you can get lucky like that with AMD Hardware. Historically they make better hardware than Intel and Nvidia, but their drivers aren't nearly as polished. So it can have its upsides.

Some instances that I can recall:
            - Phenom X3 were actually Phenom X4's
            - HD7950 were actually HD7970's
            - R390 were actually r90 R390X's
            - Vega56 cards were actually Vega64's

It's probably a poor QC lineup, with AMD exec's just letting some quality stock leak in low price brackets.

    • Ha, I thought this was a joke but it's true LMAO.

    • Yeah I just wanted to see if anyone else got this on OZB since ryzen chips are popular here but it seems to be a very rare thing. Very happy right now.
      Thank you for the link.

      • Congratulations! Nothing says the universe loves me like FREE CORES!
I've got one. With an overclock you should get much better results.
Heres a screenshot of my cinebench results which I just did when read your post (Previously have got something like 1730)

It was a little tricky to get mine stable at 3.95GHz (up to 3.85 was pretty basic) + I'm using 3200 samsung b-die ram which is crucial for a higher overclock

Dig around the reddit and forums for "segfault test" if you are worried about potential faults

I haven't had any problem with mine.

        • Oh wow someone else who has it!. I've never overclocked a CPU before and I really don't want to. I have a very shit barebones board that I DO NOT trust with overclocking (ASUS A320M-K).
Maybe I will overclock one day but not today or in the near future. I only just got it working today!
One thing I may ask is that have you had any issues with yours? the last thing I want is for it to die and lose those extra cores from an RMA.

          • @Ostrk: yeah nah don't overclock it. Like I said I haven't had any problem with mine.
The 1600 is basically just a 1700 with 2 cores amputated via laser.
They sell a lot more 1600's than 1700's and so it's more than likely that perfectly good 8 core cpu's are being cut back to 6 cores for the 1600 ie - you're probably fine.

If your worried you could do a stability test with something like a trial of Aida64 although I'm not sure how well these lower end motherboards are with stress testing software. Maybes someone else can add some input?

            • @Baron-K: I left it on overnight last night and nothing happened, it's already been more stable than half the CPUs I've used so I'm happy Lol

              • @Ostrk: Probably you can use it happily, just check when your warranty expires and check the internet a month before for any issues.

  • Google 'parts binning'/product binning.

Well done on getting a good one :). Use those threads. I would, for Julia quaternion fractal raymarching.

    • Yeah sadly I think games and Netflix will be what those threads are used for…sorry to disappoint but I have no talents :D

      • Do read around to make sure the extra cores passed testing correctly, just to be careful.

        • I don't really see how I could make sure of that but I'll try. Regardless I have warranty from both retailer and manufacturer but I'm afraid that if something goes wrong it would be replaced by a normie 1600 :(

  • You're one of the chosen ones.
