Netbook memory (EM350)

Hi,

I have the eMachines EM350 from back in January, and I am looking at upgrading the RAM, because the laptop is a little slow for me, especially when I have lots of tabs open in Chrome. Sometimes I will click on a tab, and the page will be blank for up to 3-4 seconds, and then the content will appear.

iTunes is also a bit slow to respond, I end up clicking play more than once, which results in a pause again etc.

Anyway, I would like to upgrade to at least 2GB, maybe more, does anyone know if this laptop has 2 RAM slots? So I can add memory as opposed to replacing it?

So, as far as I know I need to purchase non-ECC 200 pin SODIMM, rated at 667 MHz? Any ram that fits this description will work?

Finally where is the best place to buy it? Would eBay from China be ok?

They have only one RAM slot. You can only upgrade to a maximum 2GB. It is a DDR2 SoDIMM - you remove the 1GB and install a 2GB.

You will pay about $40-50 retail from eBay.

These Netbooks are a little bit picky with RAM brands and timing - is worthwhile buying locally where you can swap the brand if it doesn't work.

    • thanks for that, good info

yeh I think you have convinced me to buy one locally (by that I assume you mean walk into a shop that I can come back to etc), so what would be the best (cheapest) shop to go to in melbourne? MSY? what would the price range be for walk in shops in melbourne?

    got mine from ebay

i'll link you up when i get home

    has one

you have to take off the BIG cover first then take of the other one
    it's very easy to do
just take out the 1GB one and replace it with the 2GB one

    \From memory i think it is the PC2-5300 DDR2 (cost $36)

  • Hey i bought this

    "2GB Hynix DDR2 667-2 G GB PC2-5300 DDR PC SODIMM RAM "

    http://cgi.ebay.com.au/2GB-Hynix-DDR2-667-2-G-GB-PC2-5300-DD…

    • cheers!

and that was specifically for the em350?

      • i wouldn't say SPECIFICALLY for the em350, but it works for it

because there is no such thing as specific ram for a specific netbook/notebook/pc

it really depends on what ram it is using, but the ram above works

        • no, what i meant was, was that ram specifically bought for the purposes of installing in an EM350, only asking as that would provide further guarantee that this is the correct ram for my computer.

        • oh yeah, it is

i have it on my EM350, and it works perfectly

      • RAMs aren't for specific computers. They are for specific RAM sockets. Main thing in changing RAM is to get the chip that fits in the RAM socket. You don't want to spend $30+ on a RAM and only to find out it doesn't fit.

My other tip would be to switch all your settings to best/high performance and forget about the graphics/quality. Turn off any unnecessary processes that are running in the background and eating the RAM up. You can check amount of RAM being used by processes through the Windows Task Manager (Alt-Crl-Del). That's how my Pentium 4 is still running and posting this comment.

        • yeh, i know they aren't specific to each computer, but yeh… i clarified above…

        • For those on Win7 and hate going through that page for Windows task manager use Ctrl + Shift + Esc

        • I have a Lenovo S10-3 and they use DDR3 but are ALSO really picky about what kind. Something about "single rank" …which sounds rude, eh?

        • The s10-3 takes ddr2 aswell,

        • WRONG - The older S10-3 comes with N450 CPU and DDR2, but the newer ones all come with N455 which requires DDR3-10600. This happened almost a year ago…

          http://www.ubergizmo.com/2010/06/lenovo-ideapad-s10-3-update…

You can research further on the Lenovo website if you wish - but now you are informed, at least you won't make the same mistake in the future.

Lol what a sad little llama you are, why dont you actually try it seems to work for me in both my s10-3 & 3t

        • Errr… I can't "try" using DDR2, because the slots for DDR2 and DDR3 are completely different!

I own a S10-3 and have upgraded from 1 to 2GB, so I actually DO know what I am talking about :-)

How about this picture of the 1GB DDR3 module that I removed? http://i54.tinypic.com/5cpc1.jpg And here is a comparison between DDR2 and DDR3 http://img143.imageshack.us/i/ddr2andddr3comparisonap4.jpg/

Anyway, the RAM that goes into a Lenovo isn't relevant to this thread - my point was that some machines (like the newer version of S10-3) ARE particular about the type of RAM. There are numerous threads on the Lenovo Forums about problems getting the S10 to accept standard DDR3 modules, and there is only a very sort list of compatible sticks that actually work.

Again wake up, your talking about your model specifically!

You are only talking about the newer model, which may i remind you mr america there are other models out there, Actually you say that yourself lol

Edit i like how you said i was right in your first reply but now you want to argue the obscure, "The older S10-3 comes with N450 CPU and DDR2" so ie looks like the s10-3 takes ddr2 which is what i said, now you see why i think you are a sad little man

Why dont you do some research http://s10lenovo.com/viewforum.php?f=47&sid=1e89282f51f3b7e3…

        • Hi Mikinoz - my comment 25/03/2011 saying "wrong" was simply in reply to your comment that "The s10-3 takes ddr2 aswell", which I took to mean that it took BOTH DDR2 and DDR3 (either).

That's all, no problem or sadness here. Stay cool :-)

  • A final question, I read that PC2-5300 and PC2-6400 are both compatible with the EM350.

issh, you recommended the 5300 to me, but will the EM350 be able to make use of the 6400? or is the EM350 not made for this memory, but it is just backwards compatible?

in other words, will it, in this case of the EM350, be the equivalent of buying a USB 3.0 device, when I only have USB 2.0, where it will work, but no better than if I had bought the USB 2.0?

EDIT: I seem to have found the answer to my own question, it seems the FSB on the EM350 is 667MHz (5300) and not 800MHz (6400) which would mean that the 5300 would be recommended to purchase. confirm anyone?

    • either way they will both work

be the equivalent of buying a USB 3.0 device, when I only have USB 2.0, where it will work, but no better than if I had bought the USB 2.0?

      essentially yes

EDIT: I seem to have found the answer to my own question, it seems the FSB on the EM350 is 667MHz (5300) and not 800MHz (6400) which would mean that the 5300 would be recommended to purchase. confirm anyone?

depends on cost(go with cheaper option)

      it works with
      PC2-4300 DDR2 533Mhz
      PC2-5300 DDR2 677Mhz

  • old thread I know, but anyone has a video link on how to replace ram on this em350 netbook

    • there is a hatch on the bottom of the laptop. the door is held in by 1 screw. under the screw. the ram just slides a few mm out of the bracket. it's extremely simple. i put 2 gb in mine. not a problem.

      • ok cool..thought should be easy anyway..

Any chance you could still buy this ram in normal pc shop? Or is it just ebay?

        • via ebay would be least expensive.

  • An SSD would probably improve speed more than increased RAM. Even the change to a hybrid drive (Seagate XT) in my EM350 increased speed more than increasing the RAM from 1 to 2 Gb.

    • could you please link me a compatible drive? or even just the one you're using? Are we talking about SSD here?

      • I use a superceded model Seagate 500Gb hybrid drive. The current models are http://www.seagate.com/au/en/internal-hard-drives/solid-stat…
Your two options are a SSD or a hybrid SSHD. The SSD will be very fast, noticeably faster than even the hybrid drive, but the hybrid drive will have more space for the same cost. If you need the extra space use either the 500Gb and 1Tb drives linked above or another brand of hybrid drives. These are under $150 delivered on staticice.
To give an idea of boot times I observed, 3+ minutes with a spinning HDD, < 30 seconds with a hybrid drive, about 5 seconds with an SSD. So if you don't need the extra space of the 500Gb/1Tb hybrid drive, any SSD will be faster. Increasing RAM to 2Gb only reduced my boot times by about 10%.
Physical thickness of the drives has not been a problem with any of those have installed in the EM350.

        • ok, come to think of it, I probably not gonna spend close to $200 on a $200 netbook i bought 3 years ago..sorry just doesn't justify the cost, only use it while travelling once or twice a year.

        • Agreed. Installing a cheap SSD will make it a usable travel computer. MSY has Sandisk 32Gb SSD for $50 now, recently on special for $30. That is what I am doing with my EM350.

        • @oztonyau:

Cool..Could you please tell me which one are you're using? …$50 is definitely worthy upgrade..

        • Amazon have this Sandisk 32Gb SSD http://goo.gl/HcmCbx for $40 delivered.
