    3 x 60mL for $59 a month… (without discount)

    • what a bargain!

      • +4

Take the $60 and buy a proper bottle of single malt every two months.

At least 6x the whisky, and probably better quality too (I bet they sneak some junk in their tasters).

        • Well to be fair it's hard to find a great premium whisky at $60.

          • +2

            @onlinepred:

Block-quote Take the $60 and buy a proper bottle of single malt every two months.

            Hence a $120 bottle every 2 months.

@BeerCrisp: So instead of buying 3 shots of various whisky, I should wait 2 months and buy a good bottle of whisky?

I think it's easier to say if you don't know what whiskies you like (the reason this service exists), then go to a bar as it could be cheaper. Otherwise you can try services like this. I mean how do I know what $120 whisky to buy? I want to try something new so do I just read some reviews and buy it? It's much more cost effective to try various whiskies and the ones you like, then go buy the bottle.

              • +1

@onlinepred: You don't need to pay to try/drink whiskies. Dan Murphy's (bigger ones) normally have weekly tasting at their branch, sometimes they have nice whiskies to try. If you join DM membership (free), they also have whisky tasting events where you pay just $20 to participate, and they give you a $20 voucher, so essentially free. There are also annual event where you pay $80 to try around 100+ types of whiskies.

It is definitely better to buy one $120 bottle every 2 months, than to get 3 random samples of whatever Whisky Loot buys from DM or Nicks.

                • @supervigilante: So you can choose what whiskies DM are doing in their tasting? And if I want a tasting next week will they run it for me? Also the annual events can be fantastic, but realistically you have to have this timed. If I want to taste different whiskies, I wouldn't want to do it all in one day lol.

                  • @onlinepred: If you're in VIC, go to DM in Glen Waverley. They have a permanent tasting bar set up with many spirits on their shelf, all available for tasting anytime you ring the bell at the tasting bar.

EDIT but back to your question. It depends which DM you visit. Sometimes they will let you try the whiskies from previous tastings if there are opened bottles. Try asking the staff if there's a tasting session, and ask if there are other whiskies to try. Vintage Cellars, First Choice all do tastings as well.

@BeerCrisp: $120 would give you plenty of scope for a good bottle (even at the Australian extreme prices, you do not want to know how much they overcharge here).

And finding a good bottle to try is about as difficult as looking at the reviews.

Plus, as I suggested, I bet they include some dodgy stuff in their tasters. It would be easy enough to find some real gut rot to give a pretty name to - and bulk out the profit.

          • @onlinepred: Theres some good whiskys around $60
Would still be better off buying 1 premium bottle every month or 2 than these. $60/180ml thats about $230 a bottle

            • +1

@B-Man02: Yea end of the day this service is about trying various whiskies before you buy a whole bottle, buying one bottle means I don't get to try it, and what happens if I don't like it?

              • @onlinepred: I will drink it for you

              • @onlinepred:

what happens if I don't like it?

Wait till someone you don't like comes round to visit, then give them a glass 'of your special single malt'.

                • @sane: That’s what my johnies are for. Seems like a waste buying loads if bottles of whisky for people you don’t like.

  • +3

Works out to be ~$233 a bottle!

I thought they were finished with all these subscription services loot crate and garbage like that, dollar shave club etc.

    • I'm so tired of people trying to incentivise crap that does not require a subscription

BargainLoot - For just $39.99/month, I will personally curate a list of real bargains from OzBargain, personally handle the messy purchase process and deliver to your door FOR FREE in a nice hipster-looking box.

        • Shut up and take my money!

          • @zuccs: I have a far better product, the Bargain Crate.

It's the same as above but I repackage it in a wooden crate and double the price!

  • +1

And you only have to wait a month to get them …..Quote from site: Delivery: I could be on your doorstep by 27 November, 2018with free delivery.

Although I LOVE the idea of this, in practice the whiskies do not taste the same direct from the bottle.

Also their website is pure trash, I got prompted with $10 savings a total of 5 times on the home page with count downs everywhere.

  • +4

Also from their site Quote: "You'd pay $350.00 in full to taste these at home". ….bit misleading as $350 is total cost for 3 full 700ml bottles , not for 3 x 60ml samples.

    • +3

Yep pretty sure it's more cost effective to get a glass of these at a whisky bar.

    • +1

Clearly the user websiteclickhere is a spam bot. Mods.. kill the account

  • +1

Cool idea - But way too expensive. Build relationships with whiskey makers so get your prices down, see this as advertising for their company as I may like it and buy direct from them. No doubt you are already doing this and just trying to maximise your profits. I would pay $40 a month, $10 per taster and $10 postage.

    • The shots can cost upwards of $16-$22, so it seems about right.

Also a shot is 30 ml, they have 60ml. So it's 6 shots.

  • -1

Go to a whiskey bar and pay $10 a glass to try a few out and find out what you like then go to Dan Murphy and buy yourself a bottle of your favourite poison every other month, much cheaper!

    • +2

      $10 a glass?

Johnnie and Jim don't count. It starts at $20.. and that's for a starter level aberlour a'bunadh.

Unless you're talking a dram.. but I wouldn't pay $10 for a dram.. unless it was pretty fancy

    • Please tell me where I can get premium whiskies for $10 a glass

    • +1

I hereby retract my above comment. Apparently my assertion is overly optimistic. I havent taken enough notice of the pricing during my visits to whisky bars, most of which have been during corporate functions where I wasnt paying. My apologies for representing an overly optimistic price for whisky at bars.

  • I bet they just get their "rare" whiskies from DM or Nicks.
