Citibank Charge for DWI Purchase in AUD

Hi all,
Recently purchase $700 in AUD from Digital World International. Paid for it through PayPal on my Citibank credit card in AUD, got stung twenty-odd dollars for an international fee. Looking on forums it seemed this charge has been around for a few years, and is due to the merchant being out of Australia. Citibank were good enough to reverse this as a one-off.

Is there a way to tell before hand whether it will be an international transaction or not?

Also, I haven't had this problem before. Do other banks do this also?

yea get a free bankwest zero plat cc for your paypal

    • Or an ING account

  • I always use my Citibank debit card for overseas sites regardless of whether the transaction is in AUD or not. Sometimes even the ones with a .com.au domain but I know for sure they are overseas companies. So far, I only use AU credit cards on sites where businesses have a ABN displayed on their site. Even this is not a 100% safe rule.

  • It's the same with sites like AirBnB. You need to be really careful as the amount is indeed in AUD.

Get a 28 degrees card. No foreign conversion fees & no interest if you pay your full balance every month. I've had mine for over 5 years and have never paid a fee.

  • Could you have paid in non-AUD and used your Citibank plus debit card linked to paypal setup to pay in local OS currencies?

    That's what I do.

EDIT: mmmmm, not sure this will work with DWI.

Also, Interesting condition regarding Australian customers….

    2) Payment Surcharges:
    - For orders over A$1000, we will charge a fix fee of A$110 for custom handling fee."
