      As in last time I was there it was like Bali shut down for a week and everyone went to Honolulu.

      I go off beaten track places, not good for family though

          @Yaren24: Destinations I highly recommend:

          Cape Town: Train it from Joburg in a sleeper of your own, then after you arrive hire a motorbike, scooter or convertible and take the coast road to Betty's Bay. It'll be one of the most jaw dropping experiences of your life.

          Japan: fly into Nagasaki at Christmas and take bullet train all the way to Sapporo stopping at every major city, pure culture and snow beyond your imagination.

          Machu Picchu and the Galapagos: fly to Santiago and kick on to Lima. Do the Inca trail or cheat by training it down to Aguascalientes and bus it to Machu Picchu. Then on way back fly to Galápagos and stay on the three big islands outside of a tour and explore on your own for a week island hopping on fast ferries, then get a last minute cruise for $700-900.

          Egypt: Fly to Cairo via Dubai on Emirates. Take a Transfer or uber into Cairo from the airport and stay at the Le Meridien at the Pyramids with pyramid view or Mena House. Book a day car down to Saqqara and back or take the train to Luxor and head to the Valley of the Kings and stay at the Mercure on the banks of the Nile.

          Jordan: Fly to Amman and hire a car and drive to Madaba, Moab, Jesus baptism, Dead Sea, Petra and Wadi Rum.

          Four Thousand Islands, border of Cambodia and Laos: ferry over to Don Det and kick back in thatched huts for $2 a day and cycle around a garden island and live off fresh produce. Or head up to North Laos and take a long boat down the Mekong.

          New Delhi: Hire Royal Enfield motorbikes and head up into the Himalayas for a month for about $50 a day.

              @voteoften: There are over a dozen cruise shops on the main island on Santa Cruz in Puerto Ayora. A day or two before you go into a shop and ask for a last minute cruise and depending on the length of the cruise and it’s destination, ie the path around the islands, you will pay somewhere between US$700-900. I did a 5.5 day cruise that would normally cost $3000 before you arrive. Also at the time two years ago they only took cash and the ATMS on the island charge a lot for only small transactions, ie I had to do 3x $300 withdrawals. Best to take US cash over from the main land.

              Even without doing a cruise, the three main islands have so much wildlife you will think David Attenborough is right with you!
