Apple Price Drops - October 2018

looking to update our current 3rd gen iPad … wondering what people's knowledge is around expected price drops on older models now new ones were released this week.

currently, the apple refurbished 2017 iPad Pro 12.9" wi-fi only base models are at $1019. any idea on whether this price will drop further once 2018 models officially hit the shelves next week?

also out of curiosity - does anyone have any idea on the general time frame for when current models start appearing on the refurbished list?

thanks in advance!

  • apple stopped dropping prices 5 years ago. new stuff just gets stacked on top

OP is talking about price drops on older products once a product line has been refreshed.

Generally they drop the price immediately after the new version has been announced, rather than when they are available, so if the price you saw on refurbished iPads was after the 2018 models are announced, that's the price it'll likely stay on.

I'm not that familiar with their refurbished product prices though, maybe they drop the price when refurbished units of the latest versions start showing up.

IIRC, refurbished units tend to be made available around 3 months after a new product has been released, at least in the US. For example, the 2018 MacBook Pros were released in July and refurbished units started appearing in the US about a fortnight ago. They usually take longer to show up in the Australian store.

  • thanks for your replies.

lint your info is super helpful.

interestingly, refurb prices haven't changed since iPhone and iPad releases this year so seems like they stay completely consistent. and brand new older models disappear altogether online so would need to investigate in-store/go to authorised sellers. pretty quick to get rid of old stock as soon as current models hit the market.

will keep an eye out for the new MacBook Air next year on refurb. sadly the price stacking is getting frustrating.

    cheers!
