High Quality Nail Polish That Won't Break The Bank?

Hi. As a male that has never used nail polish outside of the Grill'd Polished Man charity weeks, I would like to know if anyone here would be able to point me in the direction of a decent quality nail polish that isn't to expensive as a Christmas present for the girlfriend.

I know that the main issue she seems to have with her current assortment is that they tend to go "gluggy" and not paint very easily as a result.

I want to get her something nicer than the Big W and Kmart brands she's limited herself to because of price.

Any ideas?

  • Vinylux by CND. Definitely the best.

    • Is that available in store anywhere? Or is it best to order online? If so, where?

      • Online, ebay is fine :) comes from the states mostly.
You can buy it in stores in Aus now, but will be twice the price

If they go gluggy, she needs to put nail polish thinner in it to restore it.You can buy them on ebay. All nail polish goes gluggy sooner or later but will last forever with this. Keep an eye out for Essie nail polish on sale at Priceline.

  • If you were willing to spend a little more I'd recommend gel polishes. There's a Sensationail starter kit on Amazon for $36, with a lamp and one colour plus the necessary base/top coat. My housemate's completely into it as a hobby and it makes for easy gifts. The colours are vivid and last weeks without chipping, plus the polish itself doesn't dry out or go gluggy like regular ones so it saves money in the long run.

Beyond that you could also consider stamping. The metal plates can be as cheap as a dollar on eBay, and the rubber stampers and stamping polish are really cheap too. Works best on gel polish as if the design doesn't work out it can be wiped off with acetone without affecting the gel polish underneath.

Get her to switch to shellac.
I do the mrs nail sometimes (read: maybe twice a year) and it’s been much better than normal polish.
Dries (cures with UV light) almost straight away, last longer and stay shiny, polish doesn’t dry up even if you don’t close it properly (have had bottles in as new condition for over a year, didn’t need any thinner)

    What you need:
UV curing light sub $50 from ebay
Shellac base coat and top coat (should be sub $10 from nail suppliers)
    Shellac colour (as above, $10ish)

    • Get her to switch to shellac.

I know nothing at all about nail polish. However if OP were to learn about applying this bew type with UV light etc, and do it for the mrs, that would be a thoughtful gift. Im guessing OP could learn through youtube how to apply this stuff.

Is the shellac what they use in proper nail shops ?

        That’s the stuff.
And also yes to it being a thoughtful gift, though it’s definitely not a skill you can pick up quickly, worth it tho, keep the mrs happy and you’d find your man toy purchases readily approved.

        • Just be careful, I know a few girls where Shellac has destroyed their nails

I don’t personally wear nail polish but a few of my friends use this brand…. https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/413646

    • Yeah, I would rate OPI quite highly, but I'm not a polish connoisseur by any stretch.

  • Nails inc! It has the shellac effect and very last lasting (after trying many other brands in my life).
You can get them in David Jones.

    Thanks everyone for the responses.

I ended up going with the OPI brand and bought 10 different colours. Will also keep the shellac option in mind
