What Is a Good & Cheap TRS Trip?

I just bought a $3k new laptop yesterday and would like to:
1. Claim TRS
2. Take my partner on an enjoyable trip

What are your recommendations for where to go or what to do? We're free to travel any dates and my partner has only been to Japan.

    SYD/CHC/SYD $331 on Jetstar 25 Nov

    • Thailand, Bali, Malaysia, Vietnam all should be under $400 . wait for a special. I got Vietnam last year for $250 return from sydney.Thailand was $330

  • TRS - maximum passenger concession is $900 per person or for 2 is $1800.

  • You do realise that while you can claim TRS, you are obligated to essentially pay back the GST upon reentry? I don't actually know if they check but it'd be pretty stupid of them not to given they have your passport details and know how much you've claimed on the way out.

The fine for getting caught not declaring it is more than you'd get back from TRS.

    • And how are they going to find out? As long as you don't tell they can't do a thing. If you are creative they won't be able to detect.

Never had a problem with claiming TRS and bringing things back in. Never heard of anyone having an issue, either.

      • i thought there's famous story that hit the news about a couple got tagged & caught bringing back their $50k tiffany rings after claiming gst

        • $900 per person only. Looking at the link it would appear that if you bring back something greater than $900 you can't claim TRS on anything. Reading the below it seems you are OK to bring it back in provided the value isn't over $900.

"If you are aged 18 years or over, you can bring up to AUD 900 worth of goods into Australia duty-free, or AUD 450 if you are younger than 18. Families travelling together can pool this allowance (a couple with one child can bring in a total of AUD 900 + AUD 900 + AUD 450 = AUD 2250 worth of goods into Australia without paying duty or GST). This is called your passenger concession.

If the total value of the goods you are bringing into Australia that you purchased overseas or for which you have claimed a refund under TRS is greater than your passenger concession:

you must declare all of their goods
you will need to repay the GST refund back on the goods you claimed under the TRS
duty and GST will apply to all items purchased, not just goods over the limit of your passenger concession.
Penalties can apply if you don't declare that you have goods in excess of your passenger concession."

          • @try2bhelpful: So if I claim up to 900 bucks of goods for myself upon exit, there's no issue bringing them back in?

            • @blighst: That would be my interpretation, based on the wording. Happy for someone to tell me different who has claimed lately.

You could look at a cruise. The cost includes accomodation, meals etc and you can, particularly a short notice, get a trip to various pacific islands at a reasonable price.

Cruis Guru is a good place to look.

We went on one and it was actually quite good.
