You're better off buying outright and getting a BYO Sim

      I agree,
I haven't had a phone on contract for about 3 years now, I'm closer to buying on contract when the price is similar to outright. Eg I'm on a $22.50 SIM only plan and Kogan is selling this phone for $779.

      $779 / 24 months is $32.45
This means a plan to be comparable (for me anyway) is $32.45 + $22.50 = $54.95

I'm happy to pay the handset off instead of a lump sum?

I guess it also depends on where you live and your expectations of the network.

Kogan now resells Vodafone, as far as I know? And a lot of people would consider VF as overall the worst of all 3 carriers in Australia (in Sydney they are the best though?).

This deal is for Optus, arguably the 2nd best carrier behind Telstra. And you have shops to go to in case of a problem etc.

As I said, depends on the individual's circumstances and expectations.

      • I can't find the s8+ on Kogan for that price - Can you share a link?

        Update: nevermind, I found it.

      • Problem with most Post-paid contracts these days is the lack or little subsidies they give to the purchasing value of the phone. This is because the telco is being squeezed at the plans end (ie. Look at the plans drop in the last 8 years with free calls, high data limits etc) so they save their revenue by cutting the subsidisation components.

      • If you don't mind paying outright then absolutely, otherwise if doing a comparison you should allow for the "cost of money" (eg let's say that you would get a 5% return (after tax etc) for the money that you get to keep rather than pay up front for the mobile). Then the overall cost can be even closer before looking at things like differences in coverage and (potentially simpler - eg walking into a store versus sending a faulty handset to Kogan by post) handset warranty

However, the main reason I like to purchase the mobile up front (or use a decent second hand one) is you can get a BYO sim plan that does not automatically charge you if you go over your allotted data (unlike most post paid plans). This is particularly good for my kids who, basically, found it hard to keep track of how much data they used. By learning that when they use up their data it simply stops working until the next cycle, they are now really good at managing their data usage. Sounds harsh, but the small Kogan plan now comes with 3GB of data which is a lot, in particular when considering most of the time they use wifi.

As an exception I'm on a post paid mobile plan with a 'free' mobile, but that's paid for by my work so….. ;-)

I picked up that 80GB JB Hi-Fi plan month and it worked out fantastic.

$65pm with a Huawei P20 Pro. Sold the phone for $800 so now I'm paying $32pm for 80GB of data on the Telstra network. I claim the full $65 for tax.

      Contracts can be worthwhile occasionally.

        Contracts can be worthwhile occasionally.

Exactly. The Telstra F&F Pixel 2 XL for $59/month (some managed $49/mth) is basically the phones RRP with 20GB of data on the best network.

Easy choice as to buy outright or in contract.

        • +1

Exactly! That was a fantastic deal and a no brainer even if you didn't keep the phone!

I agree your deal is fantastic. But as you said, it is worthwhile occasionally, not commonly.
Mostly the cost/data allowance is only worthwhile for the first 12 month, not the second. Think the plans of last year, e.g. Optus, how many people wish to pay $30 for 15gb atlater 2018? Its a pain to lock youself in a 24 months contract, when someone else get double data with same payment.
That's why I said odd. I didn't neg the post, but am surprised being neg.
Claiming tax is different story. You can have 12 months phone plan and still be able claim.

      • Best part of the deal is the tax component.. especially if you are a high earner (almost free)..

      • Did you sell it on eBay? I don't know anyone in the market but that sounds like a great idea selling it on.

  • Kogan is much better, if they upgrade the plans, existing customers enjoy the upgrade too. Very appreciated. Unlike Optus, feel regretted just 2-3 months after joining a plan.

    • +3

That's not really a valid reason to neg, you need to find it cheaper elsewhere or a similar deal with the s9+ seeing as you've mentioned it.

Seriously guys? You think this is a deal? 20gb for 24 months and $55???

        • +1

If you don't think it's a deal, then you don't upvote it. That's the way it works!

  • This is almost as bad as the "offer" that Optus are trying to push me on from Virgin:

$90 per month for an S9 with 10GB data and my remaining $129 waved.

I think I'll wait for my next month to kock over then take up the Telstra deal

  • +2

This is a ripper deal. Do the sums and it makes no sense to purchase this outright.

I got my s8 with 30gb on a $49 plan from Optus 4 months ago, I was on the $40 sim only plan with 12gb then,so I'm pretty happy with the deal I got now and no problem with Optus so far
