Apart from warranty, are there any other negatives to getting a grey import version of a Samsung Galaxy S9+?

Looking to get a S9+, is there any negatives to doing this? Unless someone knows of an Australian stock one for around $1100?

You don't get Australian firmware. There's also no easy way to flash the CSC now. So Samsung pay might not work, VoLTE will not work, etc..

On the plus side, you do get dual SIM support. But since the Australian Note 9 is available with dual SIM, I'd consider that a much better idea.

    • to me that's a bonus no bloatware

i was able to get samung pay to work on my phone and samsung watch, both were purchased in HK

You just end up with overseas bloatware instead.

        • ahhh no that's not accurate at all

Why does it have to be the GS9. Just find an alternative in your price range locally. Sure there are deals.

  • Double check what radio bands the grey-imports use.

Also - I think Aussie versions already have Exynos processors, but Samsung phones actually use both the Snapdragon and the Exynos processors interchangeably so check that too. (Snapdragon in US models mostly from memory, due to Qualcomm licencing issues I think.)

  • Pretty sure this one on Catch is local stock. Doesn't say it is, but doesn't say it isn't either.

    • Oh this is good, if this is Australian stock I'll be getting this I think. How can I find out? Also would Officeworks price beat this?

  • These days, Buying a Samsung s9+ gives you a JBL headphones worth RRP 350 for free. That's why I would be buying from a physical store if I were you

Disadvantage: Samsung Australia will not repair it even if you are happy to pay for it.

To give you an example, I do have an Australian stock S8. Samsung fixed my its phone screen for $220 ready the next day, whereas a 3rd party quoted $400 with no timeframe estimate.

  • I did this recently and ended up selling it and re-purchasing from telstra as the grey import would not give me access to WiFi calling which I need at home.
