What are my options for taking credit card payments for online sales?

I'm thinking of selling some merch online with my own customised website.
Is Paypal the only option available to small time merchants like me? Or is Visa and Mastercard happy to set me up with their facilities?

I guess the main thing is how much will these payment options cost me?

What did they say when you asked them?

There's a few online payment providers that are good:
    - Stripe (https://stripe.com/au) - hooks up to any bank account I believe
    - Braintree (which is paypal)
    - Eway (which required a bank merchant account)

I'd be looking at Stripe first though!!
They all just charge a small percentage of each transaction. (no monthly fees) - Stripe is 1.75% + 30ยข for each transaction

  • Shopify?

There are other small merchants as well. I forget the names but do some googling. Maybe also try https://stripe.com/au/pricing and square payments

Or is Visa and Mastercard happy to set me up with their facilities?

You do realise that they don't provide merchant facilities you need to purchase this from someone else.

I'd go with something that is prebuilt and all you need to do is customise it.

I'd agree. Go with someone like a Shopify who can give you a lot of pre-built tools to get you off the ground. If this is to be a small outfit, something like this will get you going quicker than trying plug all the bits together yourself.
