They are both overpriced and most of the stuff they sell are hollow junk. Only good for getting your divers watch waterproof tested or if you have to buy Pandora for your weirdo friend. Otherwise you'll find better quality, solid pieces, with lower prices at independent jewellers

Source: both parents are jewellers and had a shop for 40+ years. Hmmm… guess that makes me bias though so take what I say with a grain of salt!

  • I liked Michael Hill, based on a recent purchase. Very good service, assisted me in my purchase decision without being pushy at all, and provided a valuation certificate (for insurance purposes) without request.
The do promote the quality of their diamonds, but I'm an amateur at that stuff.

Probably overpriced, but without having sufficient knowledge I have to rely on my gut feelings and their reputation.

  • Prouds are absolute rubbish.

Michael Hill are overpriced and have slick salespeople (mostly lovely, just a little wearing) but some nice modern designs and the quality seems better from the few items I've had. Just be aware they'll try and up-sell you all sorts of things (cleaning cloths, care packages etc) once you commit to buying something.

Angus and Coote seem somewhere in the middle and can have some nice designs.

Some little independents can be quite good and can custom make things with diamonds you have chosen, but this will generally cost a small fortune especially as you need a pair of diamonds for earrings.

    • Prouds and Angus and Coote are actual owned by same company… I am interested to know why you feel Prouds are rubbish

  • She will appreciate Tiffany & CO, wallet wont

  • It's like maccas and hungry jacks - who really makes the better burgers

Blasphemy. The burgers are better at Hungry Jacks.

But moreso because I find if you buy the care plan it's actually quite worthwhile in some instances.
    - ie: free rhodium plating for white gold (necessary after every 18~ months as white gold is gold mixed with other minerals so it'll actually dull and lose the shine) the plating makes it look like new again
    - repairs and resizing

It's also got worldwide warranty if I recall correctly so in Aus, NZ and US(?)

Also, the lifetime diamond warranty is superb as they'll replace lost diamonds in a ring etc

Forgot to mention, you can always play with the price!! (Except for certain sale items that are already at minimum for clearance)

    • Thanks for the reminder, I need to get mine redone

  • Michael Hills has more of a higher class feel and touch to it. Having said that I've since moved on from Michael Hills as I go to a specialist jeweller for custom made pieces (not necessarily costing an arm and a leg given the quality of diamonds).

For an engagement ring Michael Hill RRP was just over double what I eventually paid (custom piece).

But it depends on how much you are spending and how many carats you intend on getting for the diamond earrings.

    • Just wait for them to have 40-50% off sale and then its much more cost effective.
