    Do you need battery life?

I'd lean to an XPS 15 9570 if you want portable

I'm thinking of a lenovo thinkpad next time I get a laptop and so maybe a P series but they might be too pricey

If you don't care about portable then there are lots of big ugly gaming machines

Yes battery life is important as I'll be doing long days.

      Thanks for the suggestions!

Since your budget is so high, I would be getting an extra battery or 2, 1 that just clips in/out .

My xps15 is like 2.8kg or something, I wouldn't recommend it for carrying around

The new ones are much lighter. For example, the one linked above is 1.8Kg with the 56Wh battery and 2kg with the 97wh battery

This one is $1200 with 40% off. I'm looking at it seriously. Great specs for the price. If I was carting one around uni though I might get a light 13 inch machine.

If you are happy to push out to $2,000 a macbook would usually be the way to go. Hands down. Even if you were just gonna put windows on it. But the recent issues with the keyboard make it a seriously dicey proposition. A real shame.

Or if OP is a Windows user, the Huawei Matebook X Pro is very similar to a MacBook - same sleek design, solid construction, fantastic battery life, great screen and comfortable keyboard. Touchpad on the Matebook isn't as responsive as Apple's, but what Windows laptop's touchpad is?

Oh wow that looks like an excellent piece. I'm gonna keep that in mind for when people ask me what laptops they should consider…

    Dell XPS 13

Refurbished from Dell, the 9360's or newer 9370's are great if you get one with an 8th gen i5 or i7.

I have one from here and love it https://www.metabox.com.au/store/Promotions

    • No one would ever bring one of those to uni on the daily or however often OP goes.

      • Why ?

        • it's big and heavy. Everything you don't want for university travel.

  • If you have an iPhone, get a Macbook pro. even a second hand one, build quality is 10/10, buy a 860 evo ssd and it'll be great.
