New Case and Power Supply Suggestions

Hi all. It's been as long time since I last built a pc from scratch, but I just took advantage of the 20% off 'peartree' code and pushed the button on some kit off eBay (Asus strix GTX 1060 card, strix ATX mboard, and AMD ryzen 5). I was wondering if anyone had some suggestions or recommendations on a suitable case (even just a brand) and power supply?

General requirements:
* quieter the better
* needs to fit that ATX motherboard and GPU
* don't expect to be adding in a second GPU
* do want to have a drive bay for a blu ray drive
* can take or leave led light shows ie dont care if it's a black monolith or a christmas tree

Was thinking a 500W Corsair modular (so I don't have a case full of unused cables) psu or similar but am struggling with finding a decent case as there are so many choices….

Budget is about the $200 mark for case and psu, so leaves around $100 for the case but am flexible.

    I recently bought a Fractal Design Define R6 case, which I find excellent, which ticks all the boxes you want except price: paid $229 MSY.

    A few months ago the previous case in this series the Define R5 was listed for $99 FWIW.

    Power supply is the most important part of the kit - a bad one can cause all sorts of problems (even blow up your other components), and a good one can be reused across builds, will be quieter, and won't cause problems. Get a SeaSonic. As for case, I concur with Fractal Design.

      I have never seen a actual case of this, I have only ever seen people making wild claims about PSU's "frying" equipment all the time. It makes zero sense given PSU's are a well understood product that has not changed much in 30 years. Can it happen? Sure. Anything can happen.

      Spending two or $300 on the best PSU available to avoid a low probability problem just seems silly. If you want to overclock components after you've bought them then sure, it makes sense to have a premium PSU. It doesn't make sense to have a slower computer because you have a premium PSU though.

      I would get a modular brand name budget PSU such as Corsair CX series which were $60 - $80 or around there.

    Seasonic is my first choice if price is no object, second choice is corsair. My seasonic x-750 recently blew after 9 years of service 24/7, rest of computer was 100% fine.

    Thanks for the suggestions, guys. Yeah, the SeaSonic looks good but given I'm trying to keep within a reasonable budget and don't expect to do any major overclocking etc I suspect I'll go one of the 500W or so Corsair PSUs.

  • Decided to go all Corsair. The Fractal R6 was very tempting but a little too much, and the Meshify didn't fit my bluray drive. Found the Corsair Carbide 100R Silent case and CXM550 at 20% off with the peartree code (so about $170 delivered for both). I know the case isn't perfect, but should do the trick. Thanks all for the suggestions.
