File management advice

So I've been running my PC on a single SSD for a year, and recently bought a HDD for extra storage.

I have various games on Blizzard (overwatch, starcraft Diablo) and Steam, and im wondering how best to shift all my blizzard and Steam stuff from my SSD to my HDD? Is it ok just to find the folders and copy and paste between the two drives?

  • I'm not sure with blizzard but I remember doing it with steam, my bro used to download the files for him, I'd copy and paste it onto an external harddrive and then paste it to my device, I'd then try to redownload it (or maybe I have to do a check?) but I have to make sure its pointed to the right folder, and it should just shift right over and work straight awawy.

    yes its perfectly fine.

    With Blizzard
    1. copy the whole folder to your new location normally at C:\Program Files (x86)\Overwatch (or whatever game)
    2. go into battlenet and you will notice the game will now show as not installed
    3. Next to the large blue INSTALL button you will see a prompt which you can click that says "Already Installed? Locate the game" and click the link
    4. locate overwatch in your drive and it will work again no downloads.

    with Steam (1)
    1. in the steam client library. Right Click the game you want to move and select "properties"
    2. in the properties menu go to the "Local Files" Tab and then select "Move Install Folder" in the menu
    3. select the drive you want to move your game to.

with steam (2) if (1) is too tedious for you
    1. go to the steam folder in your ssd drive usually located at C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps
    2. copy the entire steamapps folder to your new drive.
    3. now open/restart steam client and you may notice the installed games are no longer lit up like theyre installed.
    4. pretend to install a game and then select to create a new game files directory on your HDD and get it to locate the game you are installing
    5. for example if you are installing the witcher 3 then tell steam to install it at D:\whatever your file is\steamapps\common\The Witcher 3
    6. Steam will automatically realise an existing steamapps folder is there and all your games you moved will reappear in the client.

Hope this helps, if you get stuck just shoot me a reply

    • Thanks heaps, i've moved all my blizzard games and they all work well. WWill try Steam soon.
