Air Purifier Recommendations

Hi all,

I suffer from allergies (hay fever & dust) and i'm looking to purchase an air purifier to help me sleep better as no medication has been able to help me fully to date. I wake up multiple times during the night with a dry mouth and often have a congested nose/sinus.

As such, i was wondering what recommendations you guys had on the different air filters out there and what your experience with them was like? I'm not too fussed price wise and i'm willing to spend a bit of money if the purifier has good reviews/recommendations and is a chance to work for me.

Thanks!

  • I assume that you have consulted with your doctor to ascertain the correct cause(s).

I don't have as much as a problem as you have mentioned, but we have a Dyson Pure Cool and we find it makes a difference. Or, maybe more accurately, we think it does.
    Not cheap.

Maybe give Xiaomi a go. Personally I use a couple of Innovaair E7 at home. No fancy features like sensors or ionizers, but they are very well built and work for me. Cost more than Xiaomi but there was no Xiaomi back then, and compared to IQAir and Blueair, Innovaair is relatively cheap.

    • im also in the market and will probably get a Xiaomi. The prices are <500 with delivery. Try Kogan and youtube for reviews.

      • Now is a good time to buy Xiaomi as the Mi Purifier 2S can be had for $169 from Kogan or eBay

        • Kogan seem to have a couple of Xiaomi Mi Air Purifiers on their website, but I can only see one type on the Xiaomi (Mi) website :/. Is the "Xiaomi Mi Air Purifier (2nd Gen)" from Kogan, the same as this other one from Kogan "Xiaomi Mi Air Purifier 2S" ?

@Widget: mi.com international shows very little Xiaomi products so you're better off on their Chinese website. This has a comparison of the models including the 2S. Most deals previously were on the 2.

  • Ausclimate seems to get good reviews - https://www.ausclimate.com.au/

Plan on getting one later on - also, have you tried a neti pott? (nasal irrigation) Could help out with the allergies before bed

    • Too bad furnace filters are far from common or cheap in Australia.

      • I use a variation on this technique to filter out neighbours wood heater smoke. I got some of those furnace filters from Amazon a few years ago and fluked a very cheap shipping rate - $7 for a huge box with about 6 filters, each about 600x800mm. The filters come in different varieties for different uses. Mine have more carbon for smoke. There are others that are better for dust.

I cut pieces the size of the inlet of my reverse cycle AC's and just sit it on top. It's so high up you don't notice it. It works fantastically well and they last for ages. I reckon they work better than a special air filter machine due to the superior air movement of the AC.

  • The Asthma Council lists a few under their sensitive choice website: https://www.sensitivechoice.com/product-category/indoor-envi…

  • Allergies not an issue, but bushfire smoke drift from islands off Brisbane bad for a couple of weeks in each of last few years (especially), here, are. Through house quite badly even with everything closed.
When buying purifier, after previous smaller and very ordinary DeLonghi unit, the couple of weeks per year of dry Southwest winds also factored-in, as relates very low humidity. A minor issue here overall, but still worth doing something about.

Low humidity may not be helping with allergy symptoms, but you would already know or have some sense of that, if the case.

You said price not an issue. Sharp KC-A60JW is the unit we bought.
Simplicity of filter removal and ease of cleaning both streets ahead of previous unit.
Near inaudibly quiet on low fan speed and medium only just barely heard at distance.
Shifts decent amount of air on that setting, and when humidifier function on will empty (clever design) 4L water tank overnight - enough to make a perceptible difference in a closed room, when air otherwise a bit crispy.

Bing Lee sold it for best price at time purchased, but appears no longer available from there -

Smaller humidifier model KCA50JW, in addition, in + amongst a few eBay listings -. Prices keen relative to when we bought and you will be able to do even better with an active coupon of some sort.

Best of luck with whatever you buy. Allergies wretched for those who struggle with them.

  • Hey guys, jumping in, hope you don't mind.

I too am after an air purifier, preferably something inexpensive, but obviously one that works (<$300).

I suffer from hayfever/allergies due to dust, cat hair, and pollen, etc… which causes me to sneeze like crazy, coughing, itching etc.. the usual. Even though I vacuum and try to keep the room clean, still get issues.

Was looking into getting something basic, as my room is only approx 4mx4m (quite small). Had a look at the "Ausclimate" website, as mentioned in an above post, but their units start at $600 by looks of it (bit steep for my wallet unfortunately)

I thought about 2nd hand, came across a SHARP FU-800-J unit for $150, but hesitant as I don;t know how bad the filter is, or if bringing crap back into my house ?

Some people I've read, have purchased from the US for a fraction of the cost (inc postage and voltage transformer adapter)… would that be something worth looking into, or not required ?

Any other suggestions to look at ?

  • Anyone got any recommendations for purifier that may help reduce allergies to cat dander?
    Thanks
