Woolworths Wish eGift Cards Cashrewards Discount to Be Reduced to 3.5%? - (Update: NO!)

My single biggest repetitive retail expenditure by far is Woolworths Wish eGift Cards purchased via Cashrewards (I buy all my groceries and fuel and liquor using them).

In fact, 5% discount was the deciding factor which tipped me over from shopping at Aldi & Woolworths each week to just Woolworths AND from shopping at other major service stations to Caltex Woolworths (combined with their largely Australian ownership), and I do like shopping there.

However to my horror, I've just discovered the discount advertised on Cashrewards appears to be advertised as 'save 3.5%' - suggesting a reduction from 5%?! AAARRRRGGGH!! It has not occurred yet, and the description still says "save 5%" along with other references throughout the site - can anyone confirm? Have I misunderstood?

First I lost Amex as a payment option for them (reducing points value), then I had to pay 15c for each bag there (I keep forgetting them, or they break, or get dirty), then a drought levy on my milk, an extra 10c deposit on drink containers in Queensland, and now this! - what is the world coming to?! It is against my mantra 'look after the cents and the dollars will take care of themselves'.

Non-Frugal people already argued it is 'not worth it' to get 5% discount, arguing they would occasionally forget remaining balances on the gift cards and nullify their efforts, combined with the time it takes to pre-buy and pay using them, track balances, and a small risk element etc - but I have been buying them for a long time and fussing about with my phone and entering numbers at the checkouts to get the 5% discount…. but I may have to reconsider if it is worthwhile for 3.5%. If that happens, it'll be a whole re-think of my shopping, which may mean back to Aldi for savings and my local servo for convenience rather than Caltex Woolies… If other people are like me, Woolies may be seriously underestimating how many thousands of dollars I have pumped through them that I wouldn't have otherwise.

If it turns out the reduction from 5% to 3.5% is true… what do you think, how does it impact you? (Poll)

Mod: Removed pointless poll due to non-issue.

Update: Cashrewards is not changing discount. See comment below.

Hey guys. Nothing is changing. It's definitely 5% discount and now showing as such on site. We're investigating what happened, but believe it was a glitch in our system from a recent increase in rates for woolworths.com.au (as opposed to Woolworths Gift Cards). Thanks!

Lol I feel sorry for MrFrugalSmith, all that effort

      • Thanks for your sympathy, but regardless i'm more happy it is continuing… at least one person reading my story voted "I've just discovered discounted gift cards and will increase use of them &/or shopping there!" so the publicity has increased awareness!

  • I don't know if I'm more disappointed about the potential reduction in Gift Cards or that there is actually someone in this world selfish enough to bemoan spending 15c to help our devastated farmers….

    • It's tongue in cheek Applesmfc, I was trying to sound petty - lol! I'm from a rural area, I have cracks in my yard my dog might fall in!
Regardless, I believe it was a bit of a con job on farmers plus I hear rumours of milk going to waste as people are buying non-levied milk options and usual sales impacted (which I am not) - https://www.abc.net.au/news/2018-10-03/drought-milk-levy-lab…
      But that's different discussion topic.

If people wanted to donate money, they can donate directly. Funneling it through Woolies or Coles (and then who knows how many other middlemen) makes absolutely zero sense.

  • Ffs give it a rest about the bags and get on with the times. It's amazing to see some people donating hundreds to farmers and some complaining about 15c. What a world we live in.

    • Mate c'mon, I know it's hard in writing, but you can't tell when someone is having a lend? complaining about 15c bags, 10c drought and bottle levies - they're just references to hot forum topics of first world issues of the time followed by "what is the world coming to?" - maybe it needs to be delivered verbally

  • There's still AGL Rewards, Shopback, RACQ etc.

  • RACQ reduced Coles gift card discounts to 4%. Just found out a minute ago.
