The new Telstra Prepaid Pre-Paid Max (8GB bankable up to 200GB) can possibly be had for $17.96 per 28 days

Wife was on the old Telstra Pre Paid Extra which wasn't a good deal by any means, but we were sitting on a pile of recharge vouchers so we didn't want to move anywhere else until we'd spend them all.

Now Telstra quietly updated their main prepaid offer to Telstra Prepaid Pre-Paid Max. That includes 8GB per 28 days with data banking up to 200GB which doesn't expire (although requires an active recharge to access). So we've switched to it for now.

It's normally possible to buy a $30 Telstra voucher on eBay with 20%-30% off (see this forum post, currently selling for $21, bought from them myself a few times - can vouch). Plus take an extra 10% off during regular eBay sales, plus maybe another %5 off using discounted eBay gift cards, that potentially brings the cost down to $17.96 per 28 days.

IMO, that's a better deal than the current Boost offers, and it's still on the full Telstra network with VolLTE/VoWiFi and roaming (for which we care as we want those 2-factor authentication texts while abroad). Wife still has ~30GB of data sitting in the databank from her past Telstra Pre Paid Extra recharges. It's always possible to bank it up on demand, e.g. 38GB for $48 (a discounted $60 voucher from the same seller).

So now I'm thinking, maybe I should keep her on Telstra Prepaid Pre-Paid Max, and maybe I should even move there myself once my Telstra contract is over. I could even set one up for my old folks to be used an alternative to NBN, as they're really not data hungry.

And if that seller disappears, there's always a bunch of good offers to choose from these days.

Not posting it as a deal as it isn't compliant with OzB policies, but thought I'd still share it here.

Not sure if useful as its probably cheaper with the vouchers but if you use the automatic payment option online for your prepaid, and set it up once a month (say to recharge every 2nd of the month), it will actually increase the 28 day limit. So instead of it being 28 days, its however many days in the month (30 to 31 typically) or at least it does so for me with my current plan.

Could be useful for people like me who are a bit more lazy and get the added days in a year.

    Breakdown over a year:
    28 days payment – 13 payments a year of $30 = $391.07
    Monthly recurrent version = 12 payments of $30 = $360

Saving of $31.07 a year (and about $40 a year for the $40-dollar plan) doing the online recurrent payment (You save a month)

    Though OPs way is better
    28 days – 13 payments of $17.96 = $233.48
Saving of $157.59 compared to normal 28 day payments in a year being the obviously better choice if you can do it.

  • If you swap from Telstra Prepaid Extra to Telstra Prepaid Max will you lose your accrued data bank? Currently have 64GB I dont want to lose.

No you won't lose anything (i.e., credit, data, databank, expiry all stay the same).

      • can you acrue like 60gb of data and then recharge a lower amount that lasts 30 days if you dont need extra data to be topped up each month

I think the bank size actually doubles from 100gb to 200gb.

I changed & I did not lose my data. I rang up & got the nice lady there to change for me, so I would not lose data.

It says "every 28 days", but as it gets taken out every month automatically, it goes by the calendar month: so 28 days means calendar month if it is automatically renewed

I only have $30/month & my spare data is over 30gb now :)

Good post OP. With 30% off recharge vouchers, plus the current 10gb per month for 5 months offer, and ebay 10% off, it ends up being cheaper than a lot of deals posted for prepaid.

It works out at $20.50 per month for full telstra coverage with 12gb/month (in round numbers, amortised over one year, with ebay 10% off).

Or $27.30 for 23gb with unlimited international calls to 10 countries. Both decent offers.

    • which one is the 20.50 plan?

can you get eSim with this?

  • This sounds like a good deal - can the data be shared between my devices? Personal hotspot?

    • I don't think data can be shared on Telsta prepaid.

can you get this deal and bank Pre-Paid Max to bank 30+gb of data then switch to a 365 $70 plan

so about $100 for at least 30gb of data? i guess the catch is that calls and sms have to be within the 70$ credit but should be fine assuming you dont call or text that much (and use data voice and whatsapp)

    edit:

    so instead of 273$ for 13 $21 recharges, its $15 for a 50% off $40 sim pack + 2x$30 186day sims or $70 for the 365 day one with 40gb data for 1 year 1 month

so thats 3gb data per month for $7 a month

    • Don't you lose databank if you switch to Prepaid Max to Long Life (the 365 $70 plan)?

      • +1

Someone one whirlpool tried this and said they didn't lose any databank but one catch to keep in mind is that the databank limit on LL is only 100GB compared to 200GB on Max. So if you have more than 100GB databank on Max and you switch to LL, you could possibly lose the difference.

I will be over 100Gb banked (Prepaid Max plan) in Jan 2019
and am tempted to swap to Longlife plus
(then back to Max) just to test what happens… likely someone on WP will have got bored in holidays and will have the answer by then :)

    • Good luck and make sure to report back here :)

  • Who's is the eBay seller with discounted Telstra recharges? I want to buy.
