Question for Volkswagen Golf MK7 Owners

Hi,

So I'm looking at buying a 2015 Golf. It's only done about 15,000 km.

The owner of the car seems to have looked after it well.

But obviously being a 3 year old car it's out of manufacturer's warranty.

So I'm unsure if I should just buy a new Golf which will come with 5 years manufacturer's warranty. Or save money and buy a 3 year old car with low mileage and keep some money aside for any issues that may arise.

Can anyone with experience with this car share some insight?

Thanks in advance

No direct experience with that particular model, but dad did buy a 2010 Golf 118TSI. I reckon don't ever buy a VW. But if you must, don't buy an out of warranty VW.

    • I'm looking at Golf R to be more specific in auto. DSG.

      • Great car. I have a 2015 R Wolfsburg.

        • Having owned a Golf R mk6, they are reliable, however the most expensive of the series should something go wrong. I wouldn’t buy one second hand / out of warranty. Most kids (including me), would have thrashed the shit out of it.

Although you may come across the odd one that hasn’t had mods or an owner beat the engine to death.

          Buyer beware of hot hatches.

  • Very much below average mileage which is not always a good thing. Check for odometer roll back. The car should look like a showroom demo. If it doesn't, it doesn't match the mileage and I would just walk away.

If you're looking at base models, (TSi), they use the 7 speed dry clutch. They are not bad if used correctly. They cause a lot of problems in stop start traffic because they go through hundreds of gear changes in a short time. (Shouldn't allow that to happen to a wet clutch either but it is far more durable).

So if your 15,000km is because of lots of inner city driving without overwriting the auto, it's going to be a bad buy.

    • The car looks very much showroom condition.

It's the Golf R I'm looking into. The one I'm looking at has 6 speed DSG. I think that's the wet clutch? Correct me if I'm wrong.

      • Correct. Wet clutch.

Solid car. I've alternated mine between track and rallycross. 75,000km and going strong (albeit heavily modified). More money on mods than the car RRP, never spent money on mechanical repairs (lots of fender damage obviously).

Do not put those silly skirts. I've seen several mk7 with radiator mounting point damage from seemingly minor skirt bump and one completely written off because the front extension bumped into a parking lot stop bump.

        • Just curious what mods costed more than $62k?

( saw price on post of user ps90 below)

  • Key question, what gearbox does it have? If it's DSG double check what type it is. You want the wet clutch.

If the car has done many short urban trips for just 15k km it will have more wear and tear than a much higher mileage car. Check the service log and make sure its been done regularly regardless of distance traveled.

  • Out of curiosity what is the price?

For a brand new Golf R they're priced at around 62k.

no, price for the car mentioned in the original post

Why is VW even allowed to operate? They have killed hundreds of thousands of people by violating emissions standards because of greed. US and EU executives were convicted and sentenced to 7 years jail which is almost unheard of for corporate murder.

You'd assume that people would no longer buy from a business that indiscriminately murdered people by cheating emissions standards but maybe people just don't understand what occurred.

They have killed hundreds of thousands of people

So has the US military … they seem to get a leave pass … Volkswagen deserves one too.

They have killed hundreds of thousands of people

HAHAHAHAHA Yeah no. That's not how English works. That figure was an estimate based on the potential effects of the additional nitrous oxide and other emissions by VW group cars which breached the emissions regulations.

Of course, that doesn't mean that basically every older car is already outputting far more emissions than VW cars and so by the same logic killing millions more people.

Just stick to your Trabant, comrade Diji1.

I have a MK7 golf GTI and I've done 80,000km in it so far without any issues

  • I have a MK7 GTI, its a great car but I do worry about how the electrics will hold up.

Issues I have had where the rain sensor failed, the fuel door lock failed & the electric window switches don't function correctly sometimes. (They open and close fine if I had it manually but I should be able to flick the switch to open and close all the way).

Just looks at VW Golf on google.

Id steer well clear VW, Audi etc…

  • Also note, that a new Golf R has been updated and has a 7 speed DSG.

Would I buy a low km one depends on the price.

They seem to be holding their values well, so I'd prob buy a new one with more features/power/warranty.

I drive a 10yo GTI, I can't complain about reliability given its age and mileage (172k).

  • These are generally postDSG-mayhem and the 6 speed DSG is thought to have been the more reliable at the time.

I have a MK5 GTI equivalent (octavia) which has been going strong 6 years.

Not expensive to maintain but costs add up with DSG replacement or if things break

How much the seller want? Why they selling?

  • As far as I'm aware, mk6 volkswagen were the ones with the issues. Has it been reported that mk7 has these issues?

Anyway, I currently have two mk6 golf's with 6 speed dsgs that had both already been in for the dsg recall when I bought them. They were out of warranty when I bought them, I've had them for a couple of years and I haven't had any DSG issues… Yet.

The only thing I did as a layman when test driving used VWs was to make sure there weren't any strange sounds coming from the gearbox. There were a few that had some sounds, some shuddering, etc. May have been the clutch, I don't know.

for more user experience, existing problems/issues owners have found.

VW's are great up to 100,000 km from my own experience.
