IKEA Spare Parts

Just bought some used Ikea furniture for cheap and now I'm assembling it, I realise it's missing some dowels, screws, hardware etc.

Will Ikea be able to give me spare parts for free? or do I have to pay for them? Do they ask for proof of purchase?

Each ikea has an area near customer service that has a bunch of common spare parts you can help yourself

    • You're supposed to make a donation though

      • Which would have been done by cursing about not having the part, driving there, battling the crowds.

      • When ikea pays tax in Australia i will make a donation

        • But you're happy to buy and use their stuff?

          • @HighAndDry: Only have a chair, bookshelf & few kitchen utensils from ikea. Most of their stuff is overpriced for the quality to be honest

Hi guys. I have googled but it's all forums and articles which haven't specifically mentioned whether you have to pay for it or not which is what my question was.

Thank you to those who have made a genuine comment and helped me. I also called Ikea and it took them 30minutes to pick up my call and they confirmed they are free and if they don't have something then they will order it from Sweden for you. Hopefully that helps future people with the same question.

    • Great to hear you've googled. Did you call them by any chance?

      • Yeah, I called them but was waiting for 30 minutes before someone answered me.

  • It depends. Sometimes customer service will ask for receipt to get the parts for free. Otherwise you have to pay for the parts you need.

  • aldi sell a woodwork kit that has heaps of different sized dowels and stuff, it's pretty much and ikea kit

  • IKEA Tempe (NSW) is super helpful.

What I did was to retrofit some "braces" for a bed frame that didn't have it at the time. These stop the sides from bowing out and the slats falling through.

I printed out some instructions which included the part numbers to try. The guy spent a bit of time with me and found the bits and gave them to me for free.

They also have an area with bits you can take for free — various screws, dowels, fasteners etc.

I also managed to get some screws and braces for a drawer that were only introduced with later versions, so again it was a retrofit that stopped the bottom of the desk drawer from sagging.

So yeah, super helpful and free. Certainly helps if you knew what you were assembling and getting a copy of the instructions first.
