Help with Crashing Computer

I've recently changed my graphics card from a gtx 1060 3GB to a RX 580 8GB along with getting a new monitor (Kogan 144hz 1440p Freesync)

Since doing so my computer will crash to a black screen with a buzzing noise roughly 10mins into playing a game.

For the life of me I can't figure out why. Temperature seems fine at 75 degrees in game. Thought it could be the power supply but I have a 875W so it shouldn't be an issue. I've changed over pci slots and fiddled with the 8pin connector to make sure it's firmly in.

I'm not great with understanding logs so I couldn't see what might be causing the crashes.

Considering it's only crashing whilst a little bit into a game it makes me think I've bought a dodgy card (2nd hand on gumtree).

Can anyone help me figure out the issue?

    Uninstall nvidia drivers and restart
Make sure the AMD GPU drivers are installed and up to date

    Download DDU here.
Boot into safe mode and launch it.
Restart normally once that's done and install AMD drivers.

      I would also emphasise this

If this card has additional power adaptors (looks like the 580 has an additional 8-pin power connector, and the GTX 1060 has a 6pin), make sure it's plugged in.

Assuming you're running Windows, do you have any minidumps created? Navigate to C:/windows/minidump/ and see if there are any files there.

    • If there are no files, it's likely it's not recording back to the hard drive and means it's likely a hardware fault (can be dust).
    • If there are files, you'll need either go to your Event log and find the corresponding error log, or use WinDbg to analyse the minidump.

Run a GPU stress test like FurMark, and see if it crashes or comes up with errors.

Reseat your video card and memory (even though you may not have knowingly touched your RAM, it can get dust lodged into the pins).

Have you tried turning it on and off again?

  • Check if you have the CURRENT BIOS for that graphics card as well as the current bios for the Motherboard, make sure they are up to date.

  • Thanks everyone. I used DDU and noted I hadn't uninstalled the nvidia drivers. I reinstalled the AMD drivers again after removing them. I'm testing other games, as I just had a regular crash of Fallout 76 rather than a full computer crash so I can't be sure it's just not the buggy game atm than my hardware, however I suspect my hardware is still playing up.

I ran a stress test with FurMark and it seemed fine, although after about 8mins I think FurMark may have crashed as I came back to it 'not responding'.

Updating the motherboard BIOS seems tricky so I'm going to do that last if I can't get anything to fix it.

I'll report back if it continues to crash in other games other than the currently buggy Fallout 76.

  • Okay so computer crashed again, this time in WoW. However this one went to blue screen so I got a stop code and a 'what failed'.

    Stop code: VIDEO_TDR_FAILURE
    What failed: atikmpag.sys

    Anyone recognise what this means?

      • Yes I'm going through that, unfortunately, the file atikmpag.sys isn't in the SYstem32 folder so I can't replace it :/

        • Of course its in the system 32 folder, its just hidden, look for a guide on how to show hidden system files.

    • Try googling the code. Also, you could search for "event viewer" if your using windows, then check see what errors have come up and google them too.

What power supply do you have?

If its a generic no name "875W" it crashing may mean that it is struggling under load. The RX580 has a much higher power draw than the gtx 1060 under load.

depending on your other system components you may need a better PSU.

    • I considered that. It's a Thermaltake Tough Power XT 875W. Don't think it's too generic.

      • you're extremely unlikely to be hitting anywhere near 800W in a regular gaming PC, unless you have lots of spinning drives. You can get one of those power usage plugs to check, but i still think its unlikely. My pc has an i5 in it and a 1060, (but no spinning drives) and uses only around 300W under load.

      • Fair enough. Had to check it wasn't a bottom of the line generic chinese PSU that advertises 875W but blows up at 300W.

  • try the 580 in another pc to see if it crashes?

ps. why did you get a 580 when it is not much of a upgrade? (except from 3gb to 8gb)
    https://gpu.userbenchmark.com/Compare/Nvidia-GTX-1060-3GB-vs…

    • I am going to try that if I can get someone I know to offer theirs.

I was planning on selling my gtx 1060 for $200 on gumtree as I bought the RX 580 for $200. I bought a new monitor with Freesync so that was the main reason. I noticed the difference in running Fallout 76 on both cards with the RX 580 being smooth and the gtx 1060 stuttering.

  • Nvidia drivers are a pita. How did you remove them? I ask as there's a utility somewhere that will do the job properly whereas uninstalling from the Control Panel doesn't sometimes get them all.

    Nvidia to Nvidia is ok
    Radeon to Nvidia is ok
Nvidia to Radeon is usually horrid.

Personally I think Nvidia don't like people changing to the red team.

    • Seriously has been a nightmare, but can't rule out it being a dodgy card (bought second hand on gumtree, which is a gamble I may have lost) so not sure if its software or hardware.

I used the DDU program mentioned above to remove the old drivers.

I've basically reinstalled the drivers about 5 times, using that tool to remove them first each time.

When the computer crashes I can't make any sense of the event viewer logs as they don't reference anything that makes sense to me despite it showing 'errors'.

I've put in the gtx 1060 card again and everything is running fine in games. I need to test the AMD card in another system to see if its my computer or the card.

      • If you have another hard drive, disconnect your current drive and reinstall Windows on the second drive. This will isolate whether an existing software conflict is causing your issue.

Most BIOS's these days are easy to update. What mainboard do you have? Most have a Windows GUI application that will do the work for you.

Lastly, yep - test the 580 on another system and see if you experience any issues. Did the seller say why they were selling it? You might find the reason why it was sold second hand ;)

        • Thanks for the tips.

The motherboard is a Gigabyte GA-Z68X. The instructions on their website made it seem very risky if I didn't get things right so I didn't pursue it.

The seller said they sold their computer but the buyer didn't want the card so he was selling that separately. Sounded legit and seemed like a nice guy when I bought it. But he hasn't responded to my gumtree message asking about it, and getting a refund…

          • @Ven0m: I doubt that the BIOS would be causing your issue, however, you don't have to flash the BIOS like the olden days. Download @bios. This will automatically get the correct BIOS for your mainboard and flash it for you. You can also use @bios to check your revision to see if an update is available.

  • Can you borrow a higher rating PSU & try that in your system to see if the crashes still occur

    • That's an idea, I'll have to ask around. Thanks.

      • no sweat ;)

      • Have you swapped PSU's yet?

You don't have to take the old one out, just use the spare PSU on the outside of the case & just connect the cables to your 580

        • Managed to borry a mates spare computer so I'm testing the card in that soon. I'm fairly sure my PSU isn't the problem but can't rule it out yet.

          • @Ven0m: There are so many bits & pieces that make up a comp, ain't there?

  • out of interest, why did you switch your cards? They're pretty identical in performance, as well as in price, except the 580 will be able to handle better textures as it's got more mem.

    • I was counting on selling my gtx 1060 for the same price ($200, based on gumtree prices) and benefiting from Freesync in a new monitor I also bought.

      • ah, ok, makes sense for freesync

  • +1

I have tested the RX 580 card in a mate's computer and also had the same crash. I am going to put it down to a faulty card and an expensive lesson on never to buy second hand without proof of purchase documents for warranty. The gumtree seller has ignored all my messages so nothing I can do. In the market for a Vega 56 now. Thanks everyone for your help.

  • that's a bummer, better luck next time; all 2nd hand GPU's can't be faulty

can you report that seller to gumTree?

    • Might be able to report him but they can't do anything as the terms state is up to the buyer to ensure the goods are as described and in working order, given Gumtree just facilitates an exchange of goods. Not sure if they can warn him or cancel his account or anything either.

      • time to drink & move on

        haveagoodweekend :)
