740

This price is slightly cheaper than JB Hi-Fi and I’m sure they can price match.

Edit: I updated the link to only shot the specific product.

  • Is this the same one that can be flashed to a hero 5?

    • +1

Yeap! The one and only model. Get it before it becomes extinct as they no longer produce them. Pretty sure they will all be gone by Christmas or end of the year. This is much better than the GoPro 7 White and Silver.

      • Could you please explain a bit further 'beetlebum' and 'shyguy'
Why is this a more desirable model?

        • +4

Supposedly the internal gear is the same as a Hero5 so you can tweak the fireware to do what the hero5 can do:

In terms of the HERO 5 Black vs the HERO 2018, by all accounts the hardware is identical.

The difference is that the HERO limits the available options for video. Flashing it to a HERO 5 Black opens up the disabled features.

You can see a list of the differences here

        • Hero 2018 also has removable battery over GP7 White/Silver.

I bought a Hero 2018 from JB earlier in the week, and the reddit hack took maybe 10 minutes.

      • it's much cheaper, great find. but isn't the gopro hero 7 black better because of image stabilisation which doesn't require the use of a gimble?
trying to decide if the $270 more is worth it. don't use it all that often, would just be a good underwater camera for holidays

        • +2

I have 2 of these and use them with a separate gimbal that cost less than $200 and can be used with my mobile. So it’s more versatile. $480 for a GoPro 7 Black is too much to pay for I feel unless u really need 4K60P. After all the Hero 5 Black was a flagship model in 2016.

          • @beetlebum: Thanks OP. Does 4k60p add a lot of advantage? Just for very high paced film?

Really only need it for underwater stuff & random holidays, probably not worth the premium for gopro hero 7 black!

            Ordered one! Cheers!

@G Wok: Frankly, I have been shooting at 1080P 60FPS as I find that 60FPS provides smoother footage but slightly not as clear as 4K. It really depends on you. I find all my videos at 1080P 60FPS good enough for me. Plus if you need to edit any 4k videos, you will need good computer hardware and they also take longer to process compared to 1080P.

              Hopes that help!

              • @beetlebum: It's not just 4K@60fps. GP7 Black offers more slow mo modes (i.e. 1080p 240fps). The video quality is also better.
However, value for money, this one is obviously better. Sure, GP7 black can do 4K@60fps and better slow mo, but unless you have the setup to edit it (and while 4K monitors are getting more popular, they are still not the norm).

              • @beetlebum: This is a big misconception a lot of people have about editing 4K footage. You do NOT need a powerful computer. Most good editing software will allow you to convert to a proxy format. You do all your editing in that format then convert back to 4K or 1080p in the final render. I use an 8 year old MacBook Pro, and whilst I would love faster hardware, using this workflow as quite acceptable. Also, capturing 4K and finalising in 1080p gives you the added benefit of being able to pan and zoom within the frame which can be very useful considering GoPro's lack of optical zoom. https://forums.adobe.com/thread/2177652

    • Yep, did it a couple of days ago. Instant 4k and others at high frame rate, and miraculous GPS.

I think this is the best "budget" action cam you can find currently that is best value for money. I'm sure others will suggest some other budget ones like Xiaomi, but I find GoPro is pretty reliable after trying out some other cheap budget ones previously. My GoPro Hero 3 from 2014 is still going strong and that model offers 1080P 30FPS for a 5 yr old model! At $194 for this budget 2018 GoPro model, you can't really go wrong. You don't even need to have a housing to go under water up to 10m, plus it has voice commands and the likes of Hero 5 if you flash the firmware. Cheers!

      • Thanks mate
hope that you did enjoyed the rain
        Cheers

      • Cheers mate!
