Are Used Cars at a Toyota Dealership Negotiable

Been eyeing off this 2014 Toyota Aurion for a few weeks

https://www.carsguide.com.au/cars-for-sale/D_10002764/TOYOTA…

Went to the dealership today to test drive. Overall it was pretty good but there were a few imperfections such as sun fade on the mirror plastics and the window sills as well as a 5cm hairline scratch that i could see on the back right corner. The car wasn't really the cleanest, didn't look like it had been washed in awhile and couldn't find all of the things wrong with it as it had bits of those yellow things that come off trees that stick to cars when left outside.

The price shown is part of a sale they're having that starts on thursday which includes 1 year full comp insurance (was 18,990) ticketed price is $15,999.

I asked the salesman during the test drive if the price on the window was negotiable and he said no.

My question is when it comes to buying the car with hard cash as i want to buy the car outright, will they budge on the ticketed price when i go in for the actual sale if i point out the flaws etc?

Any advice is appreciated thanks!

Pick a price you're willing to pay (eg. $14k). Offer to the salesman, be prepared to walk away (or find a middle ground if they counter offer).

I suggest doing some more searching of similar cars for sale to get an idea of the market value

Price is always negotiable. Be prepared to haggle with a few dealers before getting the price that you want.

  • Sounds like it might come up alright with a proper detailing. What's it like mechanically? It has stuff all kays. Not necessarily a good thing either.

Edit: God these cars look boring inside. Aren't these meant to be a sporty Camry?

    • runs alright from what i could tell, smooth af no noise or gear problems but im used to 4 cylinders and no expert. Inside was good nick.

Test drove 2016 camry the other week, this felt like a better drive 5 minutes in.

as far as market price goes… no other private or dealer prices even close under 50,000km so i might be biased hah

reckon ill bring my mechanic brother with me next time to suss it.

      • Dont just bring a mechanic brother, take the car to the mechanic for inspection after the price is negotiated.

This day people need to get the price right to even inspect the car, so the price always go first before testing. If any fault found after, bring it all up and see if price can go even further down.

I believe dealership got bigger margin/negotiation room for used car as they get it for dirt cheap (trade in/auction).

lmao pretty much identical camry interior. Some would say just a rebagded v6 camry

    • What car would you say had an "exciting" interior? I have been driving cars of all types in many countries for many decades and I have never seen one that got me excited LOL.
These cars are indisputably one of the best built and reliable cars ever put on the road. Gizmos and flashing lights are not their thing as that is not the market they are aimed at.

      • I was comparing boring to "normal", not exciting.

    • The interior was a major improvement over the previous model that came out in 2006, those were rather bland.

Hey chief, if you need to ask if a stickered used car price is negotiable you are going to get absolutely hosed in the negotiations. Bring along an assertive friend/family member who can negotiate for you, and start learning how to negotiate on items smaller than a car. It's an invaluable(heh) life skill to have.

    • Thanks for the input sport.

That car has less than 20000 ks on it.. !!
Offer what you would be happy to pay but make sure you want to buy it first. Car yards get more than their share of time wasting people that have no idea what they want.
When you are sure tell the salesman you want to buy that car. Tell him your happy price and if you want it bad be prepared to up your offer a bit. Tell him you are a cash buyer and want to buy it today.
It is a used car an they all have scratches and little dints.
From their ad I think that car has been on their lot for a while?
As an alternative Camrys of that vintage are also a good buy and actual performance is good, very reliabile and maintenance costs are low.

Tell him you are a cash buye

Fyi that's a bad line. We want finance customers. Finance = commission.

More likely to get a good deal if you're financing rather than cash. "Cheaper for cash?" is a 20yo line that should've stayed in the last century. Don't use it.

But I agree with most of what you've said

    Car salesman here…

OK there's a few schools of thought here:
    1. The dealership has fixed price sales - very possible, there's a few using this business model. Check Live Market every few days (Carsales based, shows what a car sells for and how long it took), and price car accordingly. Car should then be the cheapest for it's age/kms/condition. No negotiation, take it or leave it.
    2. See above, but will still flex a bit with the right persuasion. Expect a small discount, nothing crazy.
    3. Salesperson saw you as someone too scared to negotiate, or that you weren't committed enough to buy the car.

    Some tips on negotiating:
    1. Make sure you're ready to buy. It's the old handshake scenario, if you're prepared to buy at that price you have the best power. Lines like "would you do it for $X" are weak, tell them what you'll buy it for and are prepared to buy today if they do it.
    2. Know the market. If it's the cheapest online, don't expect a huge discount, if any. It's cheap for a reason, to beat all the other dealers.
    3. Bring someone for support, but remember that you're the one buying the car. Don't let the friend do all the talking, in some instances they can kill the report which will stall negotiations.

As much as people love to hate on us, we genuinely do go out of our way if we like you. If you have good report but firm negotiation skills, you'll get a good experience and a good deal. And we'll be more likely to rectify issues if they occur.

    • Good info here. I've had a dealer actually swivel his computer to me to show me that he would be losing money if he sold it to me at x dollars but he would be prepared to do so to move stock on. How legit is this?

      • +13

        I got that spreadsheet too..

        sucker.xls

      • It might be legit, but keep in mind they are only doing it to get you to up your offer. It is possible they could have altered their ‘purchase price’ with some overhead costs based on how long the car has been in the yard. They could also be willing to sell that car at a loss because it’s been here too long and they need to get rid of it, even at a loss.

Completely 'legit' wink, I assure you.

Can be legit, can be faked, no way of properly knowing

      kill the report
      have good report

      Rapport?

      • sigh I knew that was wrong, I was tired lol

          Uh huh ;)

          Tyred?

          • +1

@John Kimble: Another jab and he'll quay your car.

  • Did the salesman also tell you it is common practice to offer the salesman a gratuity of 5% for the service they provide in writing up the paperwork?
Used car salespeople have a reputation for being flexible with the truth. I’m sure this isn’t universal, but I’m also sure it is based on underlying experiences.

That said, there are some auction houses that also sell fixed price used cars. I haven’t bought from them, but they have knocked back friends offers.

All used cars are negotiable. I'm a big Toyota fan and have found Toyota salesman are arrogant and rude, why, probably because the product they are selling is really pretty good.

    In saying that:

    Research as other people have said, carsales.com.au;
    Use getting a full detail, 12 months rego, new tyres, full service (inclusive of all fluids) inside and out as a bargaining tool;
    Do not worry about getting extended warrantee as these are usually on wear and tear parts, which is pretty much everything;
Make an offer towards the end of the month, I would start at least $5k lower than the listed and negotiate from there; and
Most importantly, be prepared to walk away. It's a Camry, there a squillions of them on the road.

Good luck and don't take their bull$hit, you're the customer!!

    Cheers
    RP

  • that's a pretty good price and low kms… this means mine is worth nothing…. wow

  • I asked the salesman during the test drive if the price on the window was negotiable and he said no.

Him saying it's not negotiable is a negotiating tactic. Just saying.

  • a car with <20k after 4 years of use.
I would check the service history and try to find out who the last owners were.

  • Having had two Hilux dual cab 4X4s and being reasonably happy with them I was in the market for a new one. Called into my local Toyota dealer and to cut the story short asked for his best price on the base model with NO extras. His response was…are you ready to buy today? What I said. Same thing…are you ready to buy today? Mate i am looking. Haven't decided on brand, ute or wagon. his next response astounded me…when you decide what you want come back and see me. I bought a Pajero.

After having 5 Toyotas in the family over many years there are now none.

    • Refer my comment above. Don't negotiate if you're not prepared to sign. Vast majority of buyers would take whatever price he offered and go next door to beat it.

Plus a Pajero ain't a Hilux so I don't think he lost a sale there, let's be honest.

  • He called me up today to see what my thoughts were. I asked if anyone else had interest in it and he told me some 84 yr old from nsw was keen on it blabla bla… and that the sale they're running with the 1 year full comprehensive insurance with every car sale ends next monday.

I've looked on carsales/cars guide/ gumtree etc… the only other aurions with similar specs in aus are 17k and above..(in different states)

A discount on 16k would be awesome but if they arent going to budge much i wouldn't regret buying it.

    • Hang on, but it's advertised at $15,999 yeah?

So about $1,000 cheaper than the next?

      • yep. Cheapest in SA ive seen last couple weeks including private sellers. 1 yr full comp for me is about 900 so theres another bonus plus 1 yr roadside assist, cap servicing and warrenty.

        • Sounds like it's worth signing up, subject to a mechanical inspection.

You've already got a good saving compared to the competition

          • @spackbace: what are the chances of getting them to a buff out a scratch and fill the tank up

also have a kia rio 08 that im gonna trade in. They dont know this yet.

            • @Jugganautx: Should be able to get a full tank, doubtful on the scratch

10yo Rio? Don't trade, put it on Gumtree

              • @spackbace: its got a slight buggered wheel alignment problem that wouldnt be worth bothering to sell privately.

                • @Jugganautx: Ok well if the Aurion is a bargain, grab it, just don't expect much for a 10yo Rio lol

                  • @spackbace: Would 1500ish be optimistic lol

                    • @Jugganautx: Just see what they say.

But if you're happy with the car and the price, don't drag your feet lol

                      • +1

@spackbace: Set for getting it on monday. 👍

                      • @spackbace: Also got a call today saying someone tried buying it yesterday and there finance fell through this morning. XD
