Travel Sim - Which One to Buy to Ensure Current AU Number Is Reachable

I am off to India next month. Woolworths mobile doesn't offer roaming services. I wish to keep my AU number active so I can receive work calls. Can I call forward my current number to a travel sim which I can take with me? I will buy local sim card for local calls and data. What's the best travel sim which serves the purpose without burning a hole in my pocket?

You could always buy a Skype number…have your Aussie number unconditionally forwarded to your skype number, then no matter where you are in the world if your phone has data then you will receive the call. Works ok for me!

  • If you forward your number you'll be paying for international calls every time someone calls you.

    • Not with a skype number! :)

      • The Aussie number will charge you when it is forwarded though, doesn't matter where it is forwarded to. Unless you mean port out to Skype?

        • Yes, you are correct, there is a very small call forwarding fee, i think its just a few cents per minute, to have the phone call to the aussie mobile number forwarded to the skype number. But it certainly isn't viewed as an international call, as the Skype number is basically a virtual LOCAL number you buy that originates in Australia, eg it will have an area code of "02" or "03" etc, you get to choose the area code from memory when you pay for the number from skype. Hope that makes sense!

          • @PotPlant: Oh I see what you mean, the Skype number would count as local and that would be forwarded again to a sim from the country being visited

@Quantumcat: Exactly! Sorry, I have a stupid way of explaining things sometimes! You are spot on. :)

          • @PotPlant: My plan has free calling all over Australia. Am I correct in assuming Woolworths mobile won’t charge me anything for calls which get forwarded to skype number?

            • @Sam J: There will be a charge, but it will be very minor. If you check the call rates/fees on your woolworths mobile contract under "forwarded calls" or something like that, you will see how much it is. I would say about 15 cents per 30 seconds or even less. I'm sure it wont be much anyway. Hope that helps.
