Aesthetic NAS build on a budget. Help needed

Hey guys,

I'm in the early stages of planning a SFF NAS build and would like some input kindly. The build would basically be used for home entertainment purposes and be able to stream movies from NAS hard drive,Plex, Kodi, etc and perhaps 4k transcoding down the track.

I do understand it's easier and cheaper to buy a second hand Qnap or Synology NAS from eBay however I do like the scope of upgradibility and aesthetics of a custom build.

After looking at few options, I'm quite confused in terms of CPU, whether to go down the track of cheaper used CPU off eBay and sacrifice upgradibility or perhaps get a new AMD, Intel or even embedded CPU/MOBO. Few options I have in mind and benchmark scores mentioned as well.

Athlon 200Ge - $85

AMD Ryzen 2200g - $148

Intel 3470s $55

Intel 4690s $110

Intel Pentium G65400 - $105

I'm hoping to find a good balance between lower TDP and decent performance which Ryzen 3 2200g does the job pretty well however bit expensive though.

Aesthetics will play a big part as the case will be on display in the living room. I'm thinking along the lines of:

Fractal design Node 304

Silverstone SG13

Raven variants

In terms of MOBO and RAM, that's highly dependent on the CPU and I'll wait before buying anything else. Probably 1x 8GB to start with.

Likewise for PSU and storage however I've picked up a Kingston 240GB SSD (thanks to TA post) and will probably pick a 8TB NAS hard drive. Any suggestions are highly appreciated.

I would like to buy majority of the items in coming days if not weeks and take advantage of the sales.

Oh also, I'm not really tech savvy but planning on running custom OS such as Xpenology, OMV or unraid.

Thanks for reading and apologies for the Long post.

PS: I'll be using this thread as my build progression and will update it accordingly.

I'm finding the Odroid H2 pretty tempting right now.

Check out freenas also. I’ve been using it for about three years and I reckon it’s great.

  • Since aesthetics is important check out these guys http://www.silentpcreview.com/section9.html

They take reviewing cases very seriously

Also you dont want a harddrive, you want at least 2 for redundancy/raid. You can even use windows storage spaces if you like (win 10 pro only AFIK) if you don't like exotic OSs
