Remote control car for 7 year old

Soon to be 7 year old son has asked for a remote control car for his birthday.

It will be his first RC however I am reluctant to to spend $50 - $100 on a piece of junk that will end up in the bin and would rather buy good quality second hand for a bit more, one that can be fixed when he stacks it or sold on if he looses interest.

However, I have no idea at all what to buy and this makes it difficult to gauge if what you are buying second hand is worth it.

Any one have any help in what to look for ? Thanks in advance.

  • Second hand is tough, it's hard to get something that's not thrashed (because let's face it they are made to be thrashed). I'd buy an ECX or a Traxxas, if you're not that savvy. ECX is bulletproof, I have one with upgraded electronics and it's hard to break, you have to do do some really crazy stuff to break it, even then I am amazed how often it doesn't break! Traxxas is like the Apple of the RC world, good but expensive. Parts however are very common, which is something to consider, they are easy to work on, easy to upgrade and tons of advice out there.

This is the least I would spend for a decent car

This well worth the extra $100, it has brushless electronics which are far superior to brushed which is in the first one

This would be better again, but slightly smaller

  • Just get a cheapie from Kmart for $20.

It should last the few days he is keen to play with it!

  • where will he play with it. If it is just indoors then you can go with something cheap if he would take it outdoors may need something more durable,

  • Thank you Addison for the brands and the links. They are a but more than I want to spend (it always is) however, I do have a little time before I need to buy so can have a look around for any sales. Do you think a seven year old would be able to control one of those ok? I would rather buy well and loose some money when I resell than chuck something broken in the bin. I also think if it’s rubbish to play with he is going to loose interest real quick, if it’s good quality I can put it away and get it out a couple of years later.

Gimli, I reckon he will mostly play outdoors with it as we are on a farm I would like something he could drive over the paddock.

    • I own the monster truck in the first link I posted, I've been letting my nephew drive it since he was 6. That's how I know it's tough lol. It's not indestructible of course, and he's broken it a few times, but parts are cheap and it's easy to fix. The Traxxas has adjustable speed for beginners, but yeah it is a lot of money. Then you get what you pay for. Try something like this perhaps

It will break a lot, but parts are really cheap. It's really no fun if you drive for 5 minutes then it breaks, you want something like I've posted, but if you don't want to spend that much and he's driving in open areas the HSP will get the job done

      • You also need to factor in a battery and a charger. A battery will cost around $40 and a charger around the same. Hobbyking are good for batteries, don't be tempted to buy the cars they are cheap but it's often hard to get parts

  • I'm not sure what $100 would get you second hand, but I know some of these remote control cars are quite fast and powerful. Be careful and ensure it is suitable for a 7 year old
You probably don't want a 7yo operating a 60km/hr vehicle. Not just the damage that might be done to the remote control car, but also damage to other property and persons (or animals).

  • So I got this for my 5 year old:. https://m.gearbest.com/rc-cars/pp_203036.html

I replaced the battery with lipo batteries. Velcro strapped a piece of cardboard under the accelerator trigger so when the kid drives it forwards it doesn't go too fast. But he drives it hell for leather backwards:)

Lots of spare parts available, and it comes with an exploded view of all the bits and pieces, but I haven't had to repair anything yet.
