If you are going for a budget build that won't be using >8GB RAM, it's better to have dual channel slow RAM than single channel fast RAM.

      • No it isn't (for most users not doing certain things).

        https://www.gamersnexus.net/guides/1349-ram-how-dual-channel…

        • Not sure whether people quite get why you posted that link.
Basically, the memory benchmark programs might have suggested dual channel is faster, but in real life app, the difference is really minor.

Thus, if you are going to do a budget build, single slot 8GB, being cheaper than 2x4GB makes sense.

          • @netsurfer: if you're gaming dual channel gives a significant boost

            • @abctoz: It's not very consistent. Based on the below:

              https://beebom.com/single-channel-vs-dual-channel-memory/

Witcher 3 runs a little bit faster on single channel (dunno why, seems odd to me). GTA V isn't much faster. To be honest, when it comes to gaming, I reckon your graphics card memory might play a bigger part. However, if you do game with your CPU's embedded GPU, then yes, go with dual channel.

        • @Diji1 That's a 4year+ old article using old CPUs and DDR3… Does not reflect the current situation and especially doesn't apply to Ryzen.

          • @AreYouAWiiizard: FYI, here is a recent review on Ryzen 3220G, including single-channel vs dual-channel, and memory scaling in different frequencies.

        • As others have mentioned this article is way too old to have any merit in todays day and age. Especially because Ryzen's infinity fabric has a huge correlation to memory bandwidth and performance.

Also average fps is not always everything, single channel usually has way lower low fps which is actually noticeable in game as stuttering. You can see this in the video where in some games like BF5, single channel has 1% that go down to 39 fps vs dual channel 1% low at 58 fps. This is very noticeable.

you can get 16gb of decent ram for 130 au odd delivered so ………..argue away

    • Can you link us to that deal. And what's decent???

      • yeah …16gb for $130 would be cool, doesn’t need to be for over clocking as lots of people just do H chipset builds .

        • Reading tea leaves does not count.

      • He might be referring to feeBay second hand ones.
