Need to Back up Photos from phone camera without Laptop on a Cruise Ship

I'm going for a cruise for a week around South East Asia. I won't bring proper camera with me, just going to use my Galaxy S6 to take pictures.
The S6 has internal memory and I easily use up the memory for taking photos and videos, especially with the kids.

What HDD that I can plug into to transfer the photos for back up?

Thank you

OTG Cable and USB Stick - done.

    • Yep. This is your answer. Done it myself, works great.

Lets you offload files wirelessly into a USB drive, memory card or USB HDD.

There are also wireless hard drives such as these and these

But OTG will do the trick, Samsung gives you an OTG adapter with the phone so you can connect USB drives to it. It might not provide power to run a portable HDD though but it'll work with SD card readers and USB drives.

    • So I just need a portable HDD connected to the power, and the phone - HDD will be connected with a usb-c & usb cable?

      • I think most hard drives will try to pull power from it's USB data cable, unless you have a really old-school HDD that has the dual USB leads that lets you hook up an additional cable to provide power.

Flash drives are more portable, you don't have to worry about power draw.

I would rather just buy an Micro-USB OTG drive, it plugs directly into your phone without any additional need for a cable.

  • You mean I can just bring a HDD and with correct cable, I can just transfer the photos directly to the HDD?

A HDD will still need power of some sort - I agree with the posters above; grab a USB 'On the Go' thumb drive (it's a normal USB drive but with a microUSB plug) or a normal USB thumb drive + an 'OTG' adapter.
Plug that directly into your phone and it will come up as external storage so you can back up to it

Variations on OTG Y power cables readily available.

The other options available now are much more convenient.

You can use Google Photos - it has the option to auto remove photos from your phone BUT they'll be backed up to your Google Account.
    All in HD.
I use this, it works really well.
If you won't have much internet access, use an HDD/USB.

That's no good, WiFi on cruises is hellishly expensive

External SD card or USB is probably the best option.

    • If data is an option, this is the best solution

Will you have access to wifi?

  • Buy a big SD card

  • If the S6 takes microSD cards (which from memory it does), you can just take a stack of these and swap them out. (but uploading to cloud or On-the-Go USB drive are better ideas).

S6, note 5 are the two who failed to copy iPhone price gouging practice, fortunately

  • one more option can be about a virtual HDD, use Google Photo, which is free, unlimited backup, just register it, and connect the wifi while inside the cruise, and the smartphone would auto- backup to Google Photo with HD version, then, you can download again in anytime when home.
Such service backup any video and photo, the video can even up to 2 hpurs and some (I personally did ever use it and backup up to 2.6 hours long video in Google Photo).
