Cashrewards vs Shopback: Promo Cashback on Same Website

Been seeing a lot of one-upping the other lately. One posts a cashback offer on x website, another will post a cashback of a higher amount on the same x website. Why? Can one let the other get the limelight solely, and after the offer has finished then put your offer? Is it really that cutthroat that one is trying to destroy the other? Business is business, huh?

  • When Caahrewards gives us cashback for shopping through Shopback, no problem copycatting that one.

Anyway, that's the same game Coles/Woolies have been playing for years, pretty cutthroat stuff. Thought Corps would be above that level.

    A little competition doesn't hurt

  • Saw an TV ad for Shopback last week.
There must be big money in tracking market research I keep thinking in the back of my head that giving this information is something people might regret later in life once they've built the database they need.

I have seen several mentions of people seeing ads for Cashrewards and Shopback. Where are you seeing them? I've never seen anything so just curious.

I've seen a stack of Cashrewards advertising on Facebook. From memory it was through one of those day time television shows - think Sunrise - where they get people on to talk about how they are saving Australians money.

        • Thanks for that, it explains why I haven't seen any advertising then. I've got all my FB advertising settings turned off so rarely see ads, and you'd have to pay me to watch an infomercial, let alone one that involves Sunrise :)

Why complain? Competition usually means better deals for consumers.

  • Let them compete. Let them get thirsty for the blood of the other and undercut further. Only good for us.

When I buy a new car I get the 2 salesmen with the best prices together and put them in a boxing ring with various swords and axes within easy reach. The winner gets the victorious honor of selling me a car.

I'd say you're confused about the product and how it works. The offers are negotiated between them and the retail businesses in regard to the commission they get for referral. LOTS of companies get money from click through referrals such as Google and even OzBargain! These are businesses who rely on throughput. You buy an item and instead of Google getting 5%, the cashback sites give you 2.5% and they get 2.5%. So if you had the option of doing a promotion or not getting the traffic then obviously you'd match the promotion. I assume some of this would be initiated by the brands to try and drive higher sales in a period.

So some of it 'cutthroat' as you say, trying to get as much business as they can but realistically they are both still making money and its a big market. Neither of them would think they ever would 'destroy' the competition. Its not like they have inventory they need to clear, just server and wage overheads which will scale pretty well with the sale throughput.

  • Can I use shop back and cash rewards at the same time? For example, if shop back has 11% and cash rewards has 7% will I get 18% cashback in total?
    EDIT:
I forgot to mention both show as activated in the browser.

  • AFAIK I don't think so.
