Australian Consumer Law: $150 Mini Toaster Oven Lasting 5 Years?

Okay. My friend and I were debating over this. I argued that you could get 3 years statutory warranty from the ACL but he wanted to pay for the extra warranty since the digital displays on these ovens were known to breakdown over time.

Is it worth it to pay $20 for 5 years "extended warranty"?

Considering an $800-$1000 phone can only be warranted for 2-3yrs, I doubt a $150 toaster could get 5.

I think a 1 year warranty is about as good as you will get under ACL for a $150 toaster - it is a relatively inexpensive appliance

  • Okay fair enough. Thanks!

  • Get one with knobs and no digital display

    • He wanted the digital display one because it lets you choose precise cooking times/temperatures and also comes with preset menu's.

The selection will be precise. The execution is no different.

Display or not, it is only going to be as accurate as the thermostat which will depend on how well the machine is built, and how clean it is inside.

It would be considered a "cheap" toaster, if it has all the displays and crap. So I would expect 1-2 years only out of it. So $20 to make it last 5 years is worth it.

  • A better question is, how valuable is your time? How many hours are you willing to spend getting the retailer to rectify under the ACL?

$150 is considered cheap for a toaster on OzBargains. As the tide rises.

Maybe it's time for a new site.

      Toaster oven.

      Maybe it's time for Specsavers.

For $150 toaster I think you'd probably only get a year or two as well, $20 I feel is a good price for 5 years, you also buy the "no hassle" amount which is basically not having to prove and argue with the company to give you your rights which while unfortunate, can make things easier.

Still though "worth it" is still questionable in 3 years time would you prefer a new toaster instead and put that $20 towards it (assuming the warranty doesn't do something similar).
