Subwoofer suggestions for home theatre + music

Hi all. Looking for suggestions on subwoofers. I’m pretty lost on the whole subject: what models to look for, specs for my scenario etc.

I’m waiting on a Pioneer VSX-932 which seems to put out about 95-90w per channel. I have two floor standing Energy RC-30 (200 watts RMS, 40Hz-23000Hz, 89 dB sensitivity) as the main, with Energy RC-Mini bookshelfs making up the rears and a RC-LCR as the centre. Room about 3.7m x 4.3m (close to 16m²?). It’ll be used for home theatre and music interchangeably.

What should I be looking at? I guess budget is a factor. I don’t really know honestly. I’m pretty tapped out after Black Friday/Cyber Monday - would $200 be sufficient? Don’t mind going second hand if it’s feasible. Size, Vented/Closed, Watts etc.? I’m pretty lost. Any suggestions/wisdom welcome.

  • Size may depend on the size of the room and how much slam you want there are plenty of reviews online fro subs SVS Velodyne B&W to name a few brands!! Go to a hifi shop and demo a couple if you can!!
You can always turn the volume down if its to loud but you can't do that if its to small !!!

    • I'd say add Wharfedale to this list. I've recommend it to a mate who was looking for a sub when I saw a good deal a couple of years back, and he's very happy.

  • +2

$200 is going to be pretty poor to average.

Second hand is your only option there.

    • What would you suggest mate? I wouldn’t be against saving for a bit and getting something more decent.

      • You appear to be in SA? Maybe something like:
        https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Paradigm-PDR100-Subwoofer-Black/…
Use a 5-10% off ebay coupon.

Personally I am a HUGE fan of SVS subwoofers, but you'd need 600-800 for a secondhand one.

        • Cheers. I saw that one actually.

What's your opinion on sealed vs ported? I've read ported is suited for films because it extends more, but sealed is more controlled and better for a smaller room (i.e. like mine). Any opinion? It'll probably be 60% movies 40% music in my scenario.

          • @Captain Howdy: Depends how serious you are with your music. Serious = sealed.

Ported far superior for movies unless you're spending $800+ on SVS

    • This!
You are not going to get anything special new for that price.
Possibly aim for a second hand Jensen or Klipsch subwoofer.

      Cheers

      • I also recommend 2nd hand. As per my comment above, Wharfedale is a great bang for the buck brand and is the second oldest speaker brand in the world.
