Graphics card upgrade? GTX into AM3+

Old pc needs a little boost.
Am3+ socket
Amd 8320 cpu
R9 290 graphics card

Cannot run assassins creed origins/odessey

Question - can I put a gtx 1060 etc into existing motherboard and lift the graphics performance a bit? Let the cpu bottleneck it, as long as can run some new games I’m ok.

edit: the motherboard is asrock 970 extreme3:

  • into existing motherboard

You're going to have to tell us what motherboard this is first. The AM3+ chipset can support the graphics card, but you'll need to make sure the mobo itself can too.

Edit: Also, yeah you'll be CPU-limited on certain games - you'll need to see how CPU-intensive the games you want to play are.

Get yourself a Ryzen… the FX are shitty especially min frames and low IPC by today's standards.

  • your cpu is fine just oc it 4.4 and newer games better utilise the fx nowadays

you can drop in any gpu you want even gtx 1070 , up the graphics settings and let it gpu bound/bottleneck

The AM3+ platform/chipset apparently only has PCIe 2.0 lanes (and doesn't support PCIe 3.0). So if any graphics card uses more bandwidth than PCIe 2.0 (not the GTX 1060 or 1070 I'm pretty sure, but better ones possibly), then the graphics card will literally be bottlenecked by the chipset itself.
