Seeking Feedback for My Simplified News Newsletter

Hey guys,

A few university friends and I have been working on a email newsletter this past year which is sent Monday/Wednesday/Friday at 7AM with our aim to keep people in the know of current events and interesting news in less than 5 minutes a day. Particularly those who don't regularly follow the news. We now have a few hundred subscribers but growth has stalled and we are not sure how to grow without spending heavily. We are also interested in how other online companies seek feedback from users in a way that isn't obstrusive.

Would love any feedback or help or some advice from your experience. It's also 100% free and will always be so I think this is the right place to post.

Here's our website www.smashed-avo.com.au to check out our newsletter if you'd like.

Thanks so much, hope this is ok to post here.

  • Quick question - how will you be different from free news sites such as news.com.au who also offer to send you daily/twice daily news alerts via email?

    • Unlike receiving a newsletter from 1 news source, we thought people would like to receive news from a number of different news agencies. (SMH, ABC, guardian, News.com.au etc.)

  • How do I get a sample newsletter without giving you my email address?

There are no contact details on the page so it comes across (to me) as a data harvesting project. As I don't want more inbox spam I wouldn't sign up to your site. If your content is good and I can view it on your site I will add it to my site rotation.

We are trying to enable individuals to view our previous emails on our website without signing up. This will hopefully be added in the next couple of weeks.

You can view our most recent email along with our other editions here: https://mailchi.mp/smashed-avo/we-made-it-to-mars

      • OK, thanks. Personally I would like to see more non-mainstream articles presented. All of those stories you linked to are already saturated on the main stream sites. I wouldn't have any reason to go to your site. (Just an honest opinion from my own POV. :) )

Google does this for me already.
Just swipe to the right on my home screen and I get curated news for me.

  • I've signed up and received three newsletters since I saw this post.

I love it actually. So much so that at 7am when gmail didn't notify me about it I was disappointed.
Turns out gmail automatically sorted this one into the promotions folder for the first time.
I don't know how any of that works, but maybe this happened to others too?

I'm trying to figure it out on my end anyway, but keep up the good work!

    • Happy to hear that @olivecheese!

That issue has happened a couple times and we try our hardest to make sure our emails don't end up in promotions - however very occasionally google's algorithm moves us into promotions. If another one of our emails goes into your promotions simply drag it into your primary emails and it shouldn't happen again.

It's great that you're enjoying SmashedAvo and please let us know if you have any more feedback by simply replying to the newsletter.
