[Refurbished] BenQ GS1 Portable Projector $349 - Battery Power, Android, Speakers, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth (RRP $999) from BenQ

200

Hey all,

I used to work for BenQ (hence the affiliation) but no longer.

This is the page / link - https://www.benq.com/en-au/projector/portable/gs1.html

This deal popped up yesterday and is a great deal. I have searched online and the cheapest deal I can find is $749.

These awesome little units are perfect for business, camping or the kids room for PS4/XBOX…

Admittedly these are refurbished but they have a 12 month warranty!

I called and have been told the quantity available is quite good but with anything OZB'ed be quick if you want one.

I have used and sold these for the last 2 years and cannot speak more highly of them.

  • The thing that bugs me about projectors is their ridiculously low resolution for the screen size. A 100inch screen needs a super high resolution, not a super low one.

    • +1

But you don't sit right up to the screen, you sit at a distance proportional to the screen size and resolution.

      • -4

But you don't sit right up to the screen

        You do if you're short-sighted

        • +2

You'd be short sighted if you bought a 130"screen with a 720p resolution projector and 4m room.

    • I'd lke to know what res a cinema uses in the projectors

      • +1

        usually 2K (2048×1080 or 2.2 megapixels) or 4K (4096×2160 or 8.8 megapixels)

      • +2

        Oh - me me me! I know that one - it's 1080P :)

        • Gold star for you.

    • +1

In some ways that is true. But really it's a trade off. The "point" of a projector is the large immersive screen, and for that, you have to sacrifice the resolution per square inch.

Eg. A cinema screen will have a much lower resolution per square inch compared to a regular projector, which will be much lower than a TV, which will be much lower than your "retina display" laptop, which will be much lower than your retina display phone. So comparing the resolution per inch of a projector to a TV is a limited comparison - sure, you can do it, but it doesnt tell the whole story.

Having said that, there is obviously a minimum acceptable resolution, where that trade off between immersion and resolution is not worth it. This minimum standard is subjective, and will differ between different people and different uses. I'm more than happy to watch stuff on my 1080p projector, but this one is probably too low resolution for my tastes.

While for you, maybe a 4k projector is minimum. Or maybe even 4k is not enough, and you demand the same resolution per square inch as your 4k TV! Or the same resolution per square inch as your phone!!! In which case, no projector will be good enough for you! Which is totally fair enough - each to their own.

Tl:dr - yeah, but it depends, and really, it's subjective.

      • How dare you be so level headed and open minded. Your reason and rational argument is not welcome on the inter webs! Let alone on this site…

    • It seems that way I know but when you think of how decent something like video-billboards look they are often way lower resolution than this.

    • Your right, in a way, but something you need to consider is diffusion. Because the light is projected onto a surface, the lines between pixels aren't as clear as on a cheap TV, so images don't look as blocky. With a cheap low resolution TV, a video is virtually unwatchable, but on a projector it doesn't look so bad. The image looks softer, not as clear. This works well for comedies and dramas where it acts to hide the little flaws, but not as well for fast paced action sequences or horror flicks where that ultra crisp look helps you immerse yourself in the moment.

  • Is it bright?

  • 1080p resolution?

    • Native 720p in the specifications tab.

      • Yep - it truly is - Like any projector it is best in a darkened room but will work fine with light. Light = contrast reduction (ie low black levels)

    • 720P this one - will downscale up to 1080p input

  • Warranty tab on the site says 2yrs but also says 12 months.
720p resolution. Not bad… But needs to be around the $200 mark

    • These are refurbished, hence the 1 year warranty.

  • That's a heck of a price drop. Reviews are mixed, but that does mean some are quite positive. That said, the lack of brightness is a bit of a bummer given most of my use is in office environments where there are lights. But it sounds like it'd be fine for a camping trip to keep kids occupied.

    • +1

Works fine in offices - I used one to do demonstrations on a daily basis for 12 months and never missed a beat. You could not mount it to a ceiling and replace a lamp based model but for portability you cannot beat it.

  • 300 Lumens 720p.. Not too good to be used during the day..

  • Very tempted at that price. Reviews are pretty good.

    • Would appear that way - yes.

If you are in Sydney you can also pickup!

    • +2

Alternatively you may call 1300 130 336 (Option 2) and pay by MasterCard or Visa

      That's from the checkout screen

      • Well spotted @Johnny-Kun

Hi guys, i'm looking for a projector in this price range and not sure with the specs, how would this BenQ compare to this one here? https://www.banggood.com/Rigal-RD817-LCD-Projector-Android-W…

    • +2

anything from bnaggood will be rubbish. Thats over rated at 3500lm. Just spend money on something better. Youll have much better experience, quality and actual ANSI lumen rating. That chinese one prabably is 100lm-200lm.

I dont belive the photos that are on that banggood page is of the projector they are selling. I believe thats fake advertising and chinese fake marketing.

    • +1

      3500 lumens - probably not!! :)

      • +1

you mean definitely not. no way that is 3500lm. They all lie from the real specs.

  • Hey Mr OzzieME any chance you have the inside scoop of when we might see some 4k compatible refurbs from BenQ??

    • Hey @Chris12345 - nothing on the horizon yet I am sorry. The W1700 / TK800 models have already cleared out the ex demo units that we used to launch and the fault rate is non existant (hence no refurbs…)

The good news is that there are a few new models coming soon so you might see some upgrades coming into the market!

  • Has these units been refurbished with new LED bulbs replaced. Wouldn't want a refurbished unit thats done alot of hours.

    • +1

Just called up their service department, was advised that all refurbished models have roughly 100hrs of run time and that they don't sell anything over 100hrs

    • +2

…and they are capable of 20,000 hours - You will throw it away before you run out of hours!!

  • +4

Pulled the trigger, been looking for a portable projector and at this price point, I couldn't pass it.

This will go well on game night with Mario Kart on the Switch hahaha.

    • Spent so many wasted hours doing the exact same thing!!

  • No more stock?

    • Yep - looks like OZB'ed already :(

  • Was about to checkout then out of stock :(

    • Was about to add to cart when it went out of stock. :-(

  • I know the deals done but this vs anker nebula?

    • Not really a BenQ fan after problems with my W1070,however this is prolly better than the Nebula.

This BenQ has sold for under $650,brand new and delivered on eBay earlier this year.

      I own several projectors.
