Best Video Cameras around $1000 in 2018/2019?

I am looking to buy a camera, DSLR or mirrorless, around the $1000 marker.

This will be mainly for videography not photography. So I would want to be able to plug a microphone and headphones into it.

Also, good lowlight performance would be ideal.

Thanks for your help.

  • Very few cameras have external mic plugs and even fewer have headphone jacks - only the flagships e.g. panasonic gh4/gh5 and sony a7 series tend to have these. If you are wishing to maximise quality and don't mind some fiddling, spend $150-200 on a zoom h1n with or without an additional Mic and then sync the audio to the video after.

For $850 you can get a decent panasonic (G7 or gx85) or Sony body (a6300) for the video. The budget doesn't go far however and will be pretty much restricted to kit zooms lens (which arent bad but are generally slower/not as good for low light) or prime lens (fixed field of view). Alternatively you can consider an lx100, lx10 or rx100 iv.

  • Thanks so much for your thoughts and suggestions!
Do you know how the A6300 would compare to the canon 80D??

    • As a rule, canon video is watered down for anything but their flagship lines, and this looks to be true here. The 80D does (probably decent) 1080p/60fps. The a6300 does good 4k, and good 4k trumps decent 1080p anytime. Dpreview did a piece comparing the two.

      • Thanks for the heads up about the Canon non-flagship lines! I didn't know that! As I replied to Jono, I'm really considering the G85 at this moment!

G85 is a great choice. Just remember that the ibis does not replace a gimbal :D

  • Panasonic G7 is your best option at this price range. It’s basically a GH4 without some of the pro options.
Just get a Rode VideoMic and some decent lenses and you’ll be in business 😀

    • Thanks for your reply! I am really leaning towards getting the g85! It is a bit more expensive but it really seems like it is worth the extra because of the built in image stabilisation etc… What do you think?

Even a flagship smartphone can be considered for videography - has mic/headphone input - longer battery life too

Canon is ok for video but Sony really kills it. Only issue is price and what Eco system you want to invest in.

Another thing to consider whether your computer is good enough to edit 4K videos too

    Sony A6300

I second this , find a second hand one that comes with a kit lens and it'll do 4K nicely
