Black Light for Finding Stains and Other Dried Bodily Fluids

Wondering what is the best black light out there for detection of this sort of stuff as I have a feeling my house might be full of unwanted dried fluids and stuff.

Recommend items that have proven to work.

Also is it unsafe to look directly into a black light like say looking into a laser.

Do you really want to know???

    • Not really no but I guess it might answer some questions.

  • It's not just the light that does it, you need a product like Luminol to make it glow.

    • Can explain more? Do I apply the luminol on the place I want to check it? Also what is luminol is it a gel or cream liquid of some sort or powder.

    • I remember watching CSI and it was so inconsistant sometimes they sprayed stuff and it glowed with a UV light, other times they sprayed stuff put glasses on and it glowed (with and without a black light).

On any place you will probably find a heap of stains and it really doesn't mean anything at all.

    This is an unusual hobby.

    • I am pretty bored and honestly finding out how clean or filthy a place is is quite important to me especially since I have been sleeping around a lot lately.. Different beds I mean not the other kind.

Got a fever recently so now my health and cleanliness is of high importance.

Also always wanted to play with one of those crime detective stuff.

Be a lot on your bed sheets.

Probably can see it from the neighbours house.

  • Not sure if OP is serious, but here's my recommendation:
    CrimeScope CS-16-500W

A hidden camera might be a better if there are trust issues.

    • Not sure how that would go down in a hotel or friends place.

This is a strange direction your life is taking Alien. I prefer the days when you focused on cheap ways to keep cool during summer.

That said one of these is probably your best bet. It's cheap, and the light is focusable so you can get a high degree of power/area.

Blacklights aren't like in the movies. The luminol they use glows very weakly and only for like 60 seconds, so if your going to do it you want to completely block out all light sources (even cracks under doors or power indicator lights or moonlight coming through curtains) and do a small area at a time. Even then, it doesn't really tell you much. You find a big stain: does that mean someone jerked it all over your couch, or did someone just spill some cereal? (milk glows under uv)

But the torch is less than $10, and comes in handy for other things, so you can get it just as a bit of fun.

    • Tell me more so I need some luminol to make this work you are saying and not just the torch itself? What do I do with the luminol? Put it where I want to check it.

I only know a little of what I've read, so don't take my words as gospel, but luminol is what they use in shows like Dexter, and its only really for finding bloodstains. It reacts with iron in blood to cause a brief glow. You put it in a spray bottle, and spray the area you're focused on.

The way I see it, if your looking for body fluids, the 3 main ones are blood, urine, and sexual secretions. Urine and sexual secretions like semen naturally contain fluorescent particles, so they glow quite strongly, urine more so than the others. Point a UV light at them, and they absorb the UV energy and re radiate it back as visible light, making them visible. But unless these stains are..fresh, they've probably worn away enough that they're not going to be visible under anything you can buy for less than $100.

Idk, it depends how much effort you want to go to. All I can tell you is there is no quick, easy and cheap way to see if that couch you picked up of the side of the road was used in a gang bang video. You're better off just washing everything. Put the couch cushion covers in the washing machine, and steam clean the fabric. That should get out the worst of it.

Then again, as a youtube video that would make for a good clickbait title - "I PICKED UP THIS COUCH OF THE SIDE OF THE ROAD AND YOU WON'T BELIEVE WHAT SHOWED UP UNDER UV LIGHT"

A friend owns a motel. She said she suspects the guests that booked the entire motel for one night may have been having an orgy. Very bad decision pulling out the black light.

Now needs to burn the place down. I presume.

Did I mention it was a seniors group. Not the cheerleader type seniors.

Although they may have had the outfits for the event.

Your friends surname isn't "bates" is it?

      • If it's a reference I don't get it, otherwise, no.

The title made me throw up in my mouth a little. I still had to read the thread though.

I bought a little Ultraviolet torch off eBay. Cost about $2. Great for finding if the pets have done a wee on the carpet.

  • Hey OP, I've got this one and it works great, used it for my Moscow trip.

PS. My previous comment had the same link.
But it was copied directly from the AliExpress app so it was shortened and caused Ozbargain to flag it as a referral.

    • Thanks man I think I will be picking up a 9, 51 and 100 LED version from ebay Australia soon just so it arrives quicker and have a voucher to use with it maybe if the mobile confirmation works out.

Yeah sleeping in a new place sometimes you just wonder and this kind of thing has always intrigued me like owning a super slow mo camera or high magnitude magnifying glass / microscope.

Just something something to satisfy the curiosity and satiate back of the mind Enquiries.

  • When you get your black light, shine it on the underside of the toilet seat and I guarantee you will never lift it without gloves again.

Also certain bugs (I believe creatures with carapaces eg scorpions and lichen will glow as well). It's fun to find out what glows and what does not, not so fun when you see your entire bedsheet, mattress, couch is glowing.

    • The fungal infection ringworm will glow under UV light as well. Fun times.

    • Nothing in my bathroom glows…
