Tasmania Car Rental First 2 Weeks of January

I have been monitoring the car rental prices for Tasmania/Hobart from Jan 2 to Jan 8 and the prices are around $70-$80 per day. Does anyone have a clue as to how to book a car for the standard $25-30 per day? Thanks.

  • Jump in the time machine and go back a few months.

It's peak tourist season, so there's very likely high demand, so they put up the prices. Tasmania is the home of high prices anyway. Petrol is still $1.60 a litre.

Just a note - take out proper insurance. There's so much wildlife in Tassie, don't end up stuffed like we did when we hit a wombat and it totalled the car. And our pick up truck hit a kangaroo and a Tassie devil on the way in to town as well. We had to pay a lot of money to the rental place.

    • Was that covered by your Loss Damage Waiver policy? ie you only have to pay the excess?

      • It was quite a few years ago so couldn't tell you, sorry.

  • Merged from Europcar Young Driver Surcharge Waiver Code

I am 22 years old and have my full license for 3 years, yet I have no choice but to pay the young driver excess surcharge ($30/day) when I am hiring cars from Europcar. Does anyone have some discount code I can use to waive that fee?

    • Try east coast car rentals. I found them cheaper for U25's when I rented a couple of years back. Young Driver Surcharge is more to do with risk/insurance than a markup on rental fees.

    • That's kind of like asking if there's a trick to not be 22… you're 22, you're by definition a "young driver".

At Bargain Car Rentals we do not charge drivers for being under 25 years of age. Any driver between the ages of 21-25 will pay the same as a driver over 25!

He is also looking for the discount code.

        • Age is not biological! Age is an identity and he should be free to identify as however old he wants to!

"But amending his date of birth would cause 20 years of records to vanish from the register of births, deaths, marriages and registered partnerships.

"This would have a variety of undesirable legal and societal implications."

How does this not apply to [other stuff] on ID documents?

@HighAndDry: I have seen 60 year olds do hanging ab crunches. Pretty sure they should have their pensioners card revoked and a tinder profile mandatory.

    • Here is the trouble. Europcar is quoting $35/day base rate + $32/day young driver surcharge which is still less than $75/day base rate from Bargain Car Rentals for Hobart in January 5 to January 10

Doesn't sound like trouble. Sounds like $8/day cheaper.

        • $67/day car rental sounds a bit excessive don't you think? In Hobart, the normal period cost only $25-30/day from Bargain Car Rentals.

          • @21510702: But you want the car in a peak period where they have even mentioned they don't have cars available during that time.

even said they don't have cars available during that time.

Also, not excessive. It seems there is a company renting out cars at $75/day and doesn't have enough cars.

      • Ah. Think of it as Europcar giving old people a discount instead of charging young drivers more? Apparently these folks:

        http://www.rhinocarhire.com.au/Under-25-Car-Rental.aspx

acts like a search for car rentals and then takes 10% off - so if Europcar is still the cheapest, at least you get a bit further off.

    • I rang Bargain Car Rentals (both the central office, online and the stores in Hobart). they are unwilling to price match the Europcar base rate and the online lady even said they don't have cars available during that time.

    • You’re young, choose a company that doesn’t have a young driver surcharge…

Try searching for car rental on google maps, normally heaps of random company’s come up that you haven’t even thought of…

      • Yep. I have done that. Heck I even looked up on rental companies in Launceston. The average is about $80-100/day during that period.

        • Hire a car in Melbourne and take it on the boat?

    • Probably a bit too late (or not - the big players do free cancellation), but I was in the same boat ~ 18 months ago.

My tips/tricks for waiving the fee are:
      1. use your employers leisure corporate code (this is a god sent during xmas too - paid $35/day for 10 days from Christmas Eve last year - public rate was $80/day. Unfortunately my new employer doesnt offer anything like this)
      2. Ace Rental Cars (owned by Hertz - cars generally a bit older though)
      3. Apex Rentals (owned by Avis/Budget - used to be older cars, but think they're half way through a fleet update)
      4. Other memberships - YHA and Union Shopper are the only two that I've seen.

  • Update to the story.

So I ended up switching the booking to Avis. The base rate is still $31/day but the young driver surcharge is only $27.5/day. I also ended up sharing this trip (and its associated car abd fuel rental cost) with 2 backpackers. Happy holiday everyone.

  • Try Vroomvroomvroom.com.au I just booked for a 7-day car hire in March for $256. Hertz quoted me over $1500.
