Basic SIM Card for Child

I'm hoping to let my 10 year old daughter walk to school and back next year and I want to give her a mobile phone with a cheap SIM that she can use on the days she's walking to school on her own. Anyone suggest any basic SIM card deals? It would literally be to send and receive a couple of texts and maybe the odd phone call.
Thanks

  • what about those cheap or free starter sims that comes up on here from time to time? I have been using those sims for my son.

    • Yes I've thought of those but don't they expire after 30 days? Would it mean getting a new sim every 30 days?

I have about 2 spare sims in my drawers currently. Using the one from the Boost offer posted here. Switching to the Amaysim one tomorrow and still have the Ovo one in my drawer.

Yes, every 28 days usually, this is the price of having a "free" number I guess.

You could also sign up to TPG $1/month plan. 50mb data included, PAYG voice and sms.

I'm also looking for my daughter and came across Belong Mobile

Belong have $10 a month for unlimited calls and 1 gig data which can be rolled over each month:

looking to get this too…anyone else have any experience with this?

    • It's the best low fuss plan. But she probably wouldn't need much if any data or unlimited calls. I think a PAYG plan like mentioned above would be better.

    • Yes we got the Belong $10 per month for our daughter a few months ago. It has been a great inexpensive option for her. I can definitely recommend.

Possibly more than you're willing to spend, but I have bought a Colesmobile SIM for $180 for 12 months. It's perfect so I don't have to keep recharging or checking whether there is any credit left. Works well for me and ends up costing $15.00 per month. It also includes a huge amount of data and unlimited SMS and calls.

  • Thank you all so much! Will investigate the options mentioned

I would also look at the belong $10 plan, unlimited calls etc, 1GB of data. BUT no excess data charges. Data speeds are sloooowed. Its a hidden little gem, at least you have SOME data, even if its mega slow. Better than NO data.

    https://www.belong.com.au/content/dam/belong/downloads/CIS-B…

What happens if I exceed my data allowance?

If you have no data remaining, your service will be slowed to a maximum of 64kbps for the rest of that monthly payment cycle, but we won’t charge you any extra. Your data at the slower speed will be unlimited.

Also I suggest having data so that you can use google maps real time location sharing.

You might need to disable data access for other apps so that she will not accidentally go over or go into the net unsupervised.

  • As a student, I use $1/month first month offers.

  • giving her a phone dose not prevent anything.

u cant do what ever you did this year to get her to school just for a few more years?

If ops daughter calls op when she gets to school, op will know she arrived safe. If ops daughter didn’t call op when she got to school, op would be aware much earlier if something had happened to their daughter and it is better to know sooner rather than later.

      • "be aware much earlier if something had happened"

im more of a preventative guy…
being made aware that horrible things had just happened 40 minutes ago and not 60 minutes ago does not interest me that much.

  • Our kids have Aldi Sims. $20 lasts a whole year, and it's on the Telstra 4G network which gives better coverage where I live.

      $20 lasts a whole year

Do you mean the ALDI PAYG $15 plus the pre-loaded $5 credit on their prepaid SIMs?

At 5c per MB, that would mean heavily limiting mobile data use right?

    • That sounds excellent - which Aldi sim plan is it?

You might want to keep in mind that kids aren't always the best decision makers, so post-paid plans, which effectively give the kid no limit on spending, can be an issue. I've had friends complain before about their kid "accidentally" signing up for some $$s per week or month subscription deal for ringtones, etc. If you go pre-paid you can at least limit the damage, and even if the kid runs out of credit for the month they can still call emergency services if needed, or you can call them.

    • I had previously put my daughter on a prepaid Telstra deal and she accidentally used up data that was included in the call credit amount twice - just by stupidly playing some games while she was out at a Blue Light Disco (which was the reason we got the prepaid deal in the first place, so she could contact me when she wanted to come home).

Twice, she ate through $40 in minutes, without realising. So I gave up and got a much better prepaid plan that will allow her to use data like this. The amounts were minuscule. Data was usually turned off, but sometimes it wasn't and this happened more than once. I also like being able to track where she is when she walks to school or from school, as we're training her independence here and there.

I have Kogan annual deals for my daughter which is less than $20 a month and unlimited calls/text, and I have just bought a $9 p/mth sim from Jeenee mobile to go in a Moochie watch I just bought for my younger son. 1gb data and unlimited calls/text. Jeenee also have an annual deal which comes in at less than $9 a month. Kogan is Vodafone and have been great, and Jeenee is Optus.

There is also the Amaysim PAYG. The $10 starter credit lasts a year (and when I bought one they only charged $5 for it.)

If it's only to send a few texts could last all year (just be sure to turn off data)

There is a random referral link on here for Amaysim, got some free credit from it too (thanks to whoever that was)
