Gluten Free Diet OzBargain Style

Hi Ozbargain,

Just found out that S/O has Celiac Disease and as such now has to move to Gluten Free diet.

This is a first in the family and we've not dealt with a similar situation in the past.

Does Ozb have any GF Favourites? Any cheap eats/hacks for GF Diet?

S/O is also finding it difficult to adapt to the taste of things like GF Bread. A hack that was shared with me earlier is to buy a tasty GF Bread of choice, then use a couple slices at a time, as needs, then freeze the rest to preserve the fridge-life.

Looking forward to the advice. Would love if anyone has any personal stories about GF Advice as S/O is finding the transition difficult (Understandably!!!).

Thanks

Have they tried cutting off their man-bun, getting a sensible haircut, shaving off their beard, wearing normal clothes and stop hanging out at “lunch served all day” niche cafes in obscure places “before they were cool”? I’ve heard these things are closely tied to gluten intolerance…

Eat things that are naturally GF (eg potato, rice, veggies, meat, eggs, etc - assuming they're not intolerant to anything else)

Isn't this normal for all types of bread? If you can't finish the whole loaf in a couple of days just freeze it.

  • Rice and potatoes are your friends and Aldi has a good range of gluten free products that are, by and large, pretty nice. My SO finds the Coles own brand bread products to be a good compromise between cost and quality. Also, if you can be at all arsed, consider baking your own bread. It's absolutely the cheapest way to make bread that doesn't taste like a cake made of sawdust.

Move on while you can. Should really be posted in the relationship section.

And can we please stop this SO nonsense? It doesn't seem to be a coincidence with vegans and gluten free people.

  • Gluten free domino pizza

  • Coles rolls as mentioned, or look up brocolli bread.

Grill fish. Find a decent takeaway that suit you both… I belive you can get a card that makes cake mixes ect cheaper at ww/coles

  • A problem shared is a problem doubled.

    • Bread machine on gumtree and buy bulk GF bread mix - tastes much better. We have a bread shop nearby that does good custom mixes.
    • Use cornflour for thickening in gravies, etc. Make sure it's true cornflour.
    • GF all purpose flours are pretty good for baking.
    • San Remo or Barilla GF pastas are pretty good.
    • Read labels as some products just happen to be GF without advertising it.
    • Keep eye on sales and 1/2 price app for GF products.
    • Use Google for GF recipes - in most cases you only need to substitute an ingredient or 2.

Out of all the allergies or intolerances, due to the GF trend, it's not too hard getting products now at decent prices or going out to eat. 10 years ago it was a pain, but I find it easier to cater for now.

(I have family and friends who need to eat GF, FODMAP, no lactose, low additive, low GI, and low acid foods for celiac, IBS, lactose intolerance, migraines, diabetes, and severe reflux, plus a poor friend who has a decent list of allergies, so I've had a go at a number of different cooking styles when they stay with us as I'd hate to make them feel like they can't eat - it's a wog thing. The worst one I found cooking for is additives, as the labelling isn't always clear with some I needed to avoid as the same additives can have different names.)

  • Plenty of easy recipes and modifications to normal food you can do.

Probably going to have to give up on bread. Though GF pizza isn't that bad.

Put the "I want to do it on the cheap" aside for the moment. Find things that she likes and enjoys eating then try and reduce the cost of making them. It's going to be an annoying transition but one that's pretty managable
