Bird Mesh. or Alternatives. Any Suggestions?

Just moved into a house with a heap of fruit trees. Trees have holes in old bird mesh. Never used the stuff before, but I can see why they used it before. birds took out every single cherry and almond and have started on all our stone fruits.

Where is the best place to buy it? What type should we avoid? And alternative options?

Cheers

  • buy from hardware store.

they sell it by the metre.

you can patch existing holes with new stuff, use fishing line as thread.

    .

  • Not sure whether this will work but some neighbours tie plastic bags on tree branches to deter birds.

  • +1

Cheap as Chips sell packs of bird mesh at good prices. Bunnings also have up to 6 metre packs for sale.

  • As an alternative to netting the whole tree, I've used small mesh bags to net just the fruit. Search for 'organza bags'.

I found the extra large 40cm x 30cm worked best and could net a few fruit in the one bag if they were close together on the tree and the fine mesh is also useful to keep insects and fruit fly out.

Just note that it's not 100% as fruit bats and determined parrots will chew right through the organza mesh.

  • Ive been looking to purchase the same thing.. ebay has heaps of alternatives, sizes and styles of mesh

  • I've heard of people using old CDs as mobiles. Not sure how effective they are.

  • Cheers all.

I saw Kogan have it as well …and potentially free shipping today

    • Edit - and the best priced stuff is gooooonnneee. I didn't get any myself :( Work getting in the way of bargains
