Credit Score - Application for Credit Card Not Submitted but Bank Requested Credit Information from Credit Bureau?

Long story short, I was looking at applying for a credit card, filled out 3/4 of the application but definitely DID NOT submit it. I did save the application which I was considering going back to complete.

Today I had an email from credit savvy advising me that there was some activity on my file. Log in and see that the bank has requested my credit information from the credit bureau even though I haven't even submitted my application.

I don't think my credit rating has changed but I am really confused as to why this has happened. The bank is Citibank. Are they allowed to do this?

Thanks in advance.

  • Are you a customer of citibanks. Some banks check credit ratings periodically to offer you credit cards loans etc…

    • Are you positive banks that you are an existing customer of can check your credit file whenever they like? That's got to be a myth.

      • Yes they do - often monthly basis

they do soft touches that show up as file access but not "credit checks" in the ordinary sense.

      • From Jan 1 they will be REQUIRED to recheck your credit report quarterly

Under the changes to the lending laws etc they have to be responsible lenders even after the lending has occurred.
Under the new system you let say could be approved for a 10K Credit card in January and then 12 months later they re-check you and determine you should now only have a 7K card.
Your card is maxed at 10K so what do they do?
They advise you your limit is now 7K and they reduce your limit.. but you now are $3000 over your limit.
They lock the card until such time as the balance is reduced to $7000 or less… so any payment you make would reduce the balance and you wont be able to reuse those funds until the balance gets below the new limit.

        • Have you got a link to these changes?

          • @Baysew: Their is going to be a national education campaign about it starting next Monday, media releases etc… the company my brother works for is working with the industry to best advise the public of the changes

    • I have a savings acct with them, no credit card.

  • Just go to mycreditfile and request for your credit file to check if it's an application record.
Then raise a correction request if so. It usually takes about ~2 months so take it as a lesson learned.

    • Such a pain but thanks. I had a bad feeling about citi bank. I won't be finishing the application that's for sure!

This has happened to me before with Citibank. I didn’t end up going through with the application and had to jump through hoops for them to remove the credit check on my file. It took them ages with numerous phone calls through the different departments.

  • Citibank op???? You accept they do the credit check up front. There scum
