What Check-in Luggage Suitable?

Hi All,

Just looking for some advice, I'm heading to Japan with my partner in June next year.

She hasn't been overseas before, but i thought i'd get her a check-in luggage for Christmas this year.

I'm looking for something that is well-made and will last quite a while.

I've narrowed it down after researching a bit for the following 3, but i dont have much experience buying luggage so i want to get your advice if possibel to make sure i'm doing the right choice.

https://www.bagworld.com.au/shop/detail/antler-titus-large-8…
https://www.bagworld.com.au/shop/detail/samsonite-blite-3-sp…

These are the 3.

I'm happy and open for suggestions also.

Thanks!

Your airline will provide information on what's acceptable in terms of dimensions and weight.

Beyond that, personally I wouldn't go for the softside cases. I think you get much better durability out of the hardshell models. I like the Antler brand, seems to be a nice balance of quality and price.

  • I am a fan of hard shelled cases too. I recently acquired a Samsonite Lite Shock, super light bag!

Use code OZ100LS and the price brings it to $349 for the larger sized one - that is unbelievable price given the RRP is $899+

Previously I had another hard shelled Samsonite case … took well over 300 flights and 55 countries.

  • American Tourister is owned by Samsonite fyi
Can't really go wrong with any of those choices - for me it mostly comes down to weight + price but your priorities may differ

What is your budget? Any idea what size suitcase you want? This Samsonite looks good too (also available in black):

  • Any luggage is great. Hard sheel or soft depends only on what you gonna put inside. Don t pack too much as you might do a lot of shopping there.

  • American tourister
About as good as samsonite, less price.

Carry on, I have the lightest samsonite ever. It's about 1.5kg only and I can stuff so much in there and be within carry on limit

Bought it using Qantas points when it was heavily discounted, else it would be $300-$400

  • I am open to hard ones, but we won't be making more than 1 trip probably every few years.
It just seems they weigh x2 as much.

    Thanks for input so far.

Bought a hard shell case from TK Maxx on clearance for about $40 a while back. Works a treat, and even if I only get 10 trips out of it, I still think its good value.

  • I usually go soft for hand luggage (usually lighter and you never know how much space is available) but it does make bringing a anything breakable a bit stressful.

Was actually really impressed with our Kmart luggage on a recent trip. Six weeks in Europe with heaps of punishment and it held up a treat. Pretty light too, for a cheap hardcase anyway.

  • I’ve had the samsonite third option and wouldn’t recommend that particular bag. It becomes front heavy and unbalanced. It also has a very weak plastic handle. Which I had repaired twice before giving up.
I’ve had other samsonite bags which have been in constant use for years. American tourister is the budget brand of samsonite, I have a couple of bags like this which are good value for money. I’d go hardshell however.

  • What would be better? 1 x Medium + 1 x Small or 1 x Large

    • 1 Large and a backpack.
With Japan, two things can happen:
      1. You lug your luggages around - so carrying 1 is easier. OR
      2. Use TaQBIN - basically you courier your luggage in advance and therefore you dont have the issue of carrying luggage around. No, it's not expensive at all.. roughly around $10 and arrive next day.
