Filtered Water - Brita and alternatives?

I used to rent a house that had a filtered water outlet that I really enjoyed.
Not having that now, I'd like to know who filters their drinking water, what are the alternatives and the best value. My local Coles has lots of Brita products, none cheap even on discount, and scarcely an alternative product.

  • We bought one of these because we got it when Big W had a really good value sale and it came with a bunch of spare filters.

We poach chicken for my cats (don't even ask) so it is good to have a ready supply of filtered water to do it in.

We use the filtered water in our Soda Stream so we get fizzy water as well. Makes it much more attractive to drink a bit of water.

Why can't you/one poach in tap water?

I usually use filtered water when I cook food to remove all the taste and impurities. Maybe overboard for the cats but just what we do.

  • We use one of these with a ceramic filter (replaced once a year).

Most health food shops have them. There is a special unit if you want to filter sodium fluorosilicate from the water as well. We don't bother as we just use rainwater. We used to have one of those brita ones but the ceramic filtered one is heaps better IMO.

  • If you're not renting and don't mind a bit of DIY (i.e. handy with a drill) consider installing a two stage water filter (using sediment and carbon cartridges). Up front cost is around $200 which includes a set of filters so more initial outlay than a Brita system but from there it's just a yearly cartridge change (depending on water usage) totalling about $20 for both cartridges. I came from using a Brita jug changing filters every 4-8 weeks to something like this which was a significant improvement in water taste and overall quality:

  • We used Brite on tap water, easy to install on your own. Replace filter every 1200l.

I installed a 2 stage filter and new tap (with filtered water outlet) at my old house.

the tap I got on ebay for ~$70 delivered.

bought the filter system second hand. gave it a good clean. something like this one

brand new filters 4 pack (2 x different microns) was $20.

and some tubing for hooking up the filter system

plumbed it all in within a few hours. (turn water off at mains first, use plenty of teflon plumbers tape -at least 6 rotations, really tighten the bottom bolt on the tap. only hand tighten the flex pipes going into the tap (over tightening will squash the O-rings and it may leak)

    • Nice score, well done! If you don't already, consider installing an inline (between the water supply and filters) pressure limiting valve. Something like this:

This will prevent your flex pipes popping off if you have a spike in water pressure.

  • Thanks guys.
I am still renting and likely to remain so.
The only non-plumbed suggestion here other than Brita costs as much as plumbing in.
It does seem that Brita has the market cornered. Like printers, the cost is not in the item but in the replacements.

  • If you do not need high volume, groupon occasionally does good brita deals (wait for extra 10-20% off groupon code).

  • Anyone heard of this Pentek counter top system? I could easily attach this to the laundry tap.

Struggling to find how much the filters cost.

    • $66 for one, $110 for two. Says at the bottom when you add to cart.

  • At the Truwater Australian site, a replacement filter seems to be $29 plus $9.50 postage.

This looking more and more attractive.

    • truwater's prices are good because they take your money and send you nothing!
If you order from these people you will most likely get scammed or get sent fake items. Not worth the risk.

    WARNING, Truwater.com.au are SCAMMERS

Warning guys, these people are lowlife, dirty scammers.
DO NOT give truwater.com.au any money, they will steal it!

I bought two Big Berkey's plus 4 'black' filters and 4 'pf-2' filters (a couple of years ago).
    Over $1000 spent.

After sending me nothing for months, lying in multiple emails. I got sent one "generic" (not berkey) travel size stainless container and two ceramic doulton filters. WTF A-HOLES.

Did a credit card charge back. The slimy scum tried to claim they had sent me what i ordered.

Lucky when I received what they had sent i could see the box was way too small and light to contain the things i had ordered. Made a video of receiving and unboxing to document these parasites trying to scam me.

Got all my money back from the credit card charge back, they tried to lie their way out of that too.

So i got a full refund after 6+ months of these F holes F-ing me around. BUT i also still had the original filter they had sent. I then got a treating email saying I have to return the filter they sent at my cost or they would get all legal on my ar$e!

    HAHAHAHA yeah right!

So anyway…do not buy from truwater.com.au they are scammers.

    • What was in the box they sent?
